The Transformation of SGMP
Optimus Prime is one of the main characters in the popular Transformers film
franchise. If you don't know the movies, maybe you recognize his name. One of his
oft-uttered lines is: "Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."
This sentiment certainly rings true for what SGMP and our members
nationwide are now confronting. I need not convince any readers here of
the challenging year we have had in government meetings (but see your
national president's piece to the left regarding his time on furlough).
Your SGMP national leadership team recognized this summer that it was time for
this organization to transform. So we are now undergoing a transformation to better
position SGMP for success in the new normal of government meetings. These changes
encompass the mission and strategic plan, the budget and the headquarters staff.
Members will soon be asked to approve a proposed new mission statement.
The mission would certainly continue our education focus, but it would also
include public outreach and advocacy (Stay tuned!). Our draft strategic plan
has four key areas: 1) Education & Certification 2) Financial Sustainability
3) Membership Stability and 4) Public Relations & Bridge Building.
We'll need a budget that supports this plan and the new normal. This year's
budget represents an honest representation of the membership and annual
conference challenges in our industry climate - no rose-colored glasses here.
It includes several significant changes and does not include several onetime expense categories that were only incurred in the previous year.
Your headquarters staff is also transforming to address the new normal. A look at
our website's staff page demonstrates the opportunities we have seized upon to rebuild
the skill sets we need to move forward with success (still a work in progress). During
the year, you will notice a new focus on member benefits and non-dues revenue.
SGMP members will continue to see more information from national on many
new initiatives in support of our members, our association and our industry.
Optimus Prime says it better than I ever could: "Transform ... and roll out."
