The SPF installation cost is less
than 1/3 of the cost of the
abatement of the sheet metal panels
alone, providing additional capital to
make more improvements we really want
to make to the facility"
to insulate the building and provide
a clean bright white surface that provided a professional appearance, at
the same time, providing a clean and
non-hazardous facility.
Numerous options were considered.
The exterior of the building will receive
a new metal siding so insulated metal
panels and various types of insulation
to be installed over the existing siding
were explored. Additionally, numerous
types of insulation were explored to be
installed on the interior of the building,
none of which could provide all of the
solutions that a spray polyurethane foam
system could provide.
To meet the requirements of the
DTE Energy's energy incentives, the
project required an R-13 on the walls
and R-19 in the roof assembly. With the
manufacturer's support, West Roofing
Systems was able to communicate all of
the benefits of SPF by utilizing Premium
Spray Products, Inc. Foamsulate 220 2

lb. CC at 2" thick on the walls and 3"
thick on the interior roof deck. First, the
local governing body approved SPF for
use as an asbestos encapsulant over
the galbestos panels and the glazing of
the windows. Second, the State's engineers needed to verify the performance
requirements of the proposed solution.
The use of SPF provided a tremendous
cost savings regarding the abatement
costs alone.
Steve Shaw, Ferrolux's Plant Manager
indicated, "The SPF installation cost is
less than 1/3 of the cost of the abatement of the sheet metal panels alone,
providing additional capital to make
more improvements we really want to
make to the facility." The SPF provided
the solution to two of the primary concerns, encapsulating and insulating,
while the required bright white finish
was accomplished with International
Fireproofing Technologies, Inc. DC 315
intumescent coating.

As this project was being completed
late fall, the ambient temperatures, dew
points and humidity levels were monitored (utilizing a Kestrel Anemometer)
and recorded 3 times throughout the
day to ensure the project was within
the acceptable manufacturer's guidelines to provide a proper coating film
which is critical in this application
should any future concerns arise in the
event of a fire. Daily safety inspections
were conducted by the onsite safety
coordinator. The project followed SPFA
Certification guidelines.
The company was faced with many
logistical challenges. First, the walls
are 50 ft. tall and with the slope of the
gabled roof, the height of the ridge is
75 ft. The structural steel acted as a
"spider web" which created difficult
access even out of man lifts. To make the
application interesting, the owner continued constructing their new annealing line as West Roofing continued the
SPF application.
Phase II consisted of a total of
492,664 square feet. 114,650 sq. ft. of
walls/windows at 2" inches thick and
378,014sf of ceiling at 3" thick requiring 1,363,342 board feet (approximately
290 sets) of 2# ccSPF to be installed and
6,700 gallons of intumescent coating be
installed prior to the target completion
of Thanksgiving.
With this very tight time frame and
with plant operations continuing in Bays
3,4 and 5 and while the new annealing
