SPRAYFOAM Professional - Summer 2017 - 9

PRESIDENT'S POST

RESPONSIBLE
SOCIAL MEDIA
F

resh back from Spray Foam 2017, we
are armed with new ideas, innovative equipment and new products to
sell. For myself, I came back with a new
business idea that is going to grow into a
new division for our company and open
us up to new customers.
As I dig deeper into the marketing
end of this new venture, I find the typical dilemmas that we all struggle with.
Our website is out of date; we don't have
fresh content; and what really separates
us from our competitors? Fortunately,
the people we are trusting in this venture are well versed in these areas.
I always considered myself technically savvy, but social media - that's
foreign to me. When asked how we
exist without Twitter, Instagram,
Facebook, etc. - the simple answer is
we just have. Our strength is in our
relationships and those were cemented
long before the advent of social media.
Fast forward to today and task yourself
with building a customer base of homeowners - it just won't happen without
social media. So being up for the challenge, we jumped in.

After a week of researching passwords, logins, resetting credentials,
we were successful in launching a
new website. We now have a platform
that tracks our leads and automatically
collects customer reviews. We are
improving our rankings and yes - we
are almost ready to start posting on the
social media. I guess it's never too late
to learn to use social media.
I have always struggled with "posting" - who really wants to know what
we have been up to, are we going to do
it right and who has the time. Well, as I
have learned, it's a necessity to "speak"
to certain groups, target audiences, and
find those customers.
As I become more familiar with
the space, I see some of the negative
effects of social media, through misuse. I came upon competitors knocking competitors with regards to types
of spray foam installs, less than stellar
installs, cleanliness of work and even
unsafe practices. Is that really the best
approach for our industry? What type
of mark does that give the industry?
Wouldn't time be better spent speaking

with that competitor and working with
him, or suggesting avenues where he
could learn. Our detractors have field
days with posts like that.
So, as we get ready to start posting,
we are going to keep a few things in
mind. The photos we choose, are they
a good representation of our company?
Do the applicators have all the necessary PPE on? Are they working safely?
Does the product look as it should? Are
the products being applied where they
should? Often the photos are after
thoughts and staged - that's when we
tend to forget all needed PPE.
I would hope those posts could be
removed, as they don't serve in making any of us any better. A better competitor makes us our industry stronger.
Be responsible. o
