SPRAY FOAM OFFERS

O

ne of the strongest selling points
of spray polyurethane foam is its
adherence to just about anything. These
days, spray foam professionals are testing that theory in new and innovative
ways. Whether it's an unusual hobby,
such as taxidermy, or a new sideline like
slab jacking, more and more companies
are adding additional services and finding ways to expand.
But spray foam is not always spray
foam, and anyone with a spraygun and a
truck won't always succeed. Expanding
into new areas requires a bit of ingenuity
- and maybe just a hint of artistic flair.
"In each business, it's a little different," said Bruce Schenke, product manager of roofing for Accella Polyurethane
Systems. "Each application has its
own idiosyncrasies. You need to know
more about the codes related to that
application."
And it may mean creating tools -
since few are on the market. When Rick
Rocheleau, president of Vertex Insulation
Inc. in Fairbanks, Alaska, began insulating pipes, first they were already
sprayed in the ditch. A fairly high water
table made that problematic. So he opted
to start insulating the pipes before they
were installed. That meant creating a
special mandrel that acts like a lathe,
turning the pipe as it is being sprayed.

"You couldn't buy a lathe that would
do what we needed it to do," Rocheleau
said. "So we had to get creative."
That same approach might be needed
no matter what area of expansion a
spray foam company pursues.

PERFECT FOR
HARSH CONDITIONS
Rocheleau's company has capitalized
on its unique setting. Fairbanks is the
coldest city in the United States, but
sees summer temperatures topping 90
degrees. Pipes of any type are buried
five feet deep, much shallower than
Anchorage, which puts piping at 12
feet deep. So every pipe that goes into
the ground - whether from the local
water utility or by a homeowner - is

insulated. "It's a matter of survival here,"
Rocheleau said.
Rocheleau's father began spraying
pipe in 1966, first using a combination
of vermiculite and asphalt before finding "foam was substantially better and
cheaper," Rocheleau said. The city now
includes spray polyurethane foam in its
project specs.
Of course, Vertex will insulate homes
and commercial buildings, but piping
is "a big part of our business." The
foam goes on about three inches thick.
Some projects require a coating on top
to allow it to be installed beneath the
water table.

A HULL OF A JOB
Jim Calman, President of J. Calman
Industries, also takes advantage of spray
foam insulation properties to acclimate
products. Nowhere is that more evident
than in the commercial fishing vessel
work Calman does.
"Our crew installs insulation and
coatings in the hull and fish holds of
ships," he said. "This is a challenging
job that varies with the type of species
caught. Every fish is caught in a different way and the fish holds vary as well.
Some preserve their catch with refrigerated sea water, others use a salt brine. It
depends on the species and how far the
