battles occurred at the estate's property, but the property did witness minor
infantry skirmishes during both wars.
In one notable account during the Civil
War documented by the local archives,
Union Army canon fire intended for
Confederate troops behind the home
actually beheaded the Blakemore family's mule. The Blakemore family filed
a claim with the U.S. Government for
the mule's death, and many years after
the war the government paid the family $5.25.
The Blakemore family owned the
home until 1958, purchased by a Fred
Alger who owned it from 1958 to 2010.
Since 2010, the home has been sold
and bought several times. The current
owners wish to remain anonymous.
Considering the home belongs to the
historic register of Old Homes of Virginia
and has a family cemetery that contains
the remains of many of the Blakemore
family as well as their descendants, it
is clear that any restoration job would
require careful planning and execution.
Enter Elite Insulation & PolyPro LLC,
the contractor tasked with the job of
applying exterior wall spray foam to the
home. The company became involved
in the project due to a previous relationship with the home's builder and
restorer Randy Ferris, who employed
the two companies for an insulation
job at Hawthorne Estate, a home once
owned by George Washington. Farris
works with Elite Insulation & PolyPro
LLC exclusively on his historic projects
due to their expertise and attention
The three-day job successfully
tackled the 3,000-square foot home.
Equipment on the project included the
6900 Full-Face Respirator Proportioner,
the Graco H-XP2 hydraulic machine,
the Graco Fusion Air-Purge PluralComponent Spray Gun, the Elite sprayer
used to apply spray foam to the exterior of the log home and two inches of
FOAM-LOK 4G 2 lb. closed-cell spray
polyurethane foam formulated by
Lapolla. Elite Insulation and PolyPro LLC
used Lapolla's 2000 4G foam and coating as well. Prior to this job, the home
only received two small additions and
stucco exterior covering.
