Looking Forward to
Being of Service
BY MIKE RITCHIE, CIRCUIT RIDER #1

Throughout my
career, I found
VRWA to be
invaluable. The
rural water
community
was of great
assistance to
me at every
level, providing
relevant
training and
support for
the current job
and helping to
prepare me for
the next.

MY NAME IS Mike Ritchie and I was recently hired as a Circuit Rider. Many of you may recognize me as I have been involved with VRWA for many years. I was a member of the Conference
Committee starting in 1990. I also served on the Board of Directors from 2004 to 2017, holding
the offices of President, Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer. Serving as a board member gave
me the opportunity to meet with our elected representatives and advocate for rural water programs,
meet water professionals from all around the country and receive specialized training. I encourage
you to get involved with your association. It has been a wonderful experience for me.

I began my career over three decades ago
in 1985 as an operator trainee at a wastewater
treatment plant. In 1989 I began working for
the Town of New Market (a charter member of
VRWA) where I found a home for the next 28
years. During my tenure with the town I held
the positions of operator, plant superintendent,
public works director and my final role as
town manager.
Throughout my career, I found VRWA to be
invaluable. The rural water community was of
great assistance to me at every level, providing
relevant training and support for the current job
and helping to prepare me for the next. When
I was considering retirement I knew I would
miss the VRWA family so when presented with
the opportunity to be a Circuit Rider I knew this
would be a perfect fit. I look forward to seeing all

my old friends and meeting new ones as I travel
the back roads of our beautiful state. I expect to
learn more from you than you will from me but
hopefully I can draw on my experience to be of
service to you as well.
I want to thank everyone who has already
shown me support and offered their best
wishes for this new adventure. In particular I
want to thank Kenny Reynolds for all he has
done not only for me but for VRWA. Kenny
leaves some big shoes fill. I'll do my very best.
The entire VRWA staff has been very helpful
getting the new guy off to a good start and
I've received a few really good tips for living
out of a suitcase.
I'll be making my way around to each of your
systems in the near future and I look forward to
seeing you soon.
