FromThePresident BY PAM BAUGHMAN, VRWA PRESIDENT Let Me Introduce Myself AT ThE RE-oRgAnizATion meeting held at the conclusion of the Virginia Rural Water Association business meeting of April 24 at the Hotel Roanoke, I was elected as President. I consider this a great honor and privilege. The goals I have set for the Association and myself during my tenure are to improve communication and training opportunities for the membership. The goals I have set for the Association and myself during my tenure are to improve communication and training opportunities for the membership. But before I get too carried away, I thought it would be helpful to tell you about myself. Many of you already know that Louisa County Water Authority has been my employer for the past seventeen years and I love to shoot my shotgun. But did you know that I have two adult children, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, four grandchildren and three granddogs? I love to dance (not that I am good at it), I would rather bake than cook and that I am a fan of almost any kind of sporting event known to man. My competitive nature seems to get me in all kinds of trouble … I hate losing more than I love winning. When I do win, I don’t mind busting out the happy dance. It’s a character flaw. Communicating with others is fascinating to me, but don’t be offended if I forget your name … I am terrible with names. I am much better with numbers and that is why I work in the financial field. My current position is Finance Manager, Risk Management Coordinator and Quality Assurance/Quality Control Manager for Louisa County Water Authority. In this role, I also serve as the Secretary/Treasurer to the Board of Directors. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Averett University, with an emphasis in e-commerce and an Associates Degree from Northern Virginia Community College in accounting with a cumulative grade point average of 3.86. My employment with Louisa County Water Authority began on June 24, 1996, as Office Manager, the first full-time office employee for the Authority. At that time, there were 60 to 70 water and wastewater customers, the accounting functions were performed manually, and the office was located in a converted garage bay in the maintenance shop. I quickly learned my duties as Office Manager and how Louisa County Water Authority is organized and operated, then made the decision to become a “student” of the Authority and my goal was to learn all aspects of the industry. My studies began with reviewing documents received in the office, reading articles in water/wastewater publications, attending training classes and becoming involved with associations dealing with industry issues. Over the past 17 years, I worked to build and maintain positive, professional working relationships with water/ wastewater professionals. These relationships have become invaluable, creating a very beneficial network for problem solving, information sharing and support. Relevant classes and training sessions have prospered my understanding of the water/wastewater business. My curiosity did not go unnoticed and my management team encouraged me to focus on my professional and personal growth. As Finance Manager, I oversee all of the day-to-day financial aspects of the Authority, which includes, but is not limited to, an annual operating budget of $2.6 million and managing www.vrwa.org 7 http://www.vrwa.org
