VRWA HELD ITS 29th Annual Conference April 24-26 at the beautiful Hotel Roanoke and Conference

Center. On Monday, "Mother Nature" thought she was going to throw a wrench into our plans, but
our golfers and shooters enjoyed the day despite the rain. Inside, where it was dry, the exhibit hall
started to come alive with pipe and drapes being installed, exhibitors putting in their exhibits and
a couple of training classes in process. This year, for the first time, we offered a 4-hour CPR/AED/
First Aid Class, which 19 students attended.

Another
successful
conference
is now behind
us and as
usual, we
have started
on next
year's event.

Monday night "Sneak Preview" opened the
conference up with a nice reception and gave
the attendees their first preview of the latest
equipment and technology. The hall was buzzing
with laughter as the attendees walked around to
see the many exhibits.
Tuesday consisted of breakfast, classes, an
opening session, a business meeting, lunch,
a vendor night and ended with "Southern
Corrosion Casino Night." At the opening session, attendees heard from Robert Nooney with
Homeland Security who introduced his class,
which provided an overview of the available
tools and resources from the DHS Office on
Infrastructure Protection. Kent Watson (Texas
Rural Water/NRWA Director/Chairman of the
Legislative Committee) presented an update on
what was happening on the home front at the
NRWA office. He talked about the challenges
we will face with the new government and the
importance of working together in order for our
programs to stay on top.
The 29th Annual Business Meeting was held
for the purpose of presenting reports and the
election of board members. After the meeting,
the board held an organizational meeting for
the purpose of electing the new slate of officers.
New board members are
as follows:
* Mark Estes (Halifax
County SA) - Region V
* Todd Kilduff
(Goochland County PU)
Region IV - At-large
* Tracy Puckett
(Lee County SA) -
Region 1 - At-large

2017-2018 Slate of Officers
* Pam Baughman (Louisa County Water
Authority) - President
* Tom Delbridge (City of Emporia) -
Vice-President
* Todd Kilduff (Goochland County PU) -
Secretary/Treasurer
This year we held our 17th Annual Drinking
Water Taste Contest. Judges Trisha Henshaw
(DPOR), Misty Johnson (ODW) and Kent Ware
(VA Rural Development) looked, smelled and
tasted water from across the Commonwealth. This
year's winner was Lee County Public Service
Authority. Lee County water sources are spring fed
and the type of treatment is membrane filtration.
Our third runner up was the Town of Luray and
coming in second was Three Springs Water Plant.
We ended the night with "Southern Corrosion
Casino Night" where the dice was thrown, laughter was heard and flat-footing was seen. I seriously
doubt if anyone could out flatfoot Mark Estes or
"Tumble Weed." Oh! Maybe Deputy Fife could
out-dance them? Once again we thank Southern
Corrosion for sponsoring our casino night, giving
our attendees a wonderful evening to unwind, visit
with old friends and make new ones.
Wednesday ended on a high note as we finished up with our training classes, exhibits and
our awards presentations. Lunch was provided
on the Garden Terrace (and yes, it was hot) and
Barney Fife closed us out. Another successful
conference is now behind us and as usual, we
have started on next year's event. As always, if
you have any suggestions, please send them to us
as we always strive to make it bigger and better.
Save the new date - mark your calendars now
for our 2017 Expo, to be held October 16-18 at the
Augusta ExpoLand, Fishersville, Virginia.
