These Boots Are
Made For...What?
BY BETTY GREEN WASTEWATER TECHNICIAN

"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you
criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes." -Wolfgang Riebe

There is a
saying that
goes: "If the
shoe fits, wear
it." However,
when it comes
to your BOOTS,
a one-size fits
all formula
does not apply.

GROWING UP IN the 60's, I remember a song

that I used to sing - "These Boots Are Made
for Walkin'" - recorded by Nancy Sinatra
and the single hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot
100 charts. Strangers can tell a lot about you
by looking at your footwear. So according to
research, "you are your shoes" - well, in an
operator's case, "we are our BOOTS." Our
BOOTS tell a story, and every pair of BOOTS
have a different story to tell. Oh what a story
our BOOTS would tell if they could talk.
They would tell stories of the many miles
that they have walked all over the treatment
plants, the endless days and many nights and
holidays still walking over the plant. The colors - black, brown, light brown, dark brown,
and now ladies have been seen wearing the
colors pink and purple - these BOOTS all
have a mission in mind. Never did I think during my childhood days that a pair of BOOTS
would be an important part of my life and
development into a career that has brought
me so much joy. An operator may wear his
or her BOOTS for eight to 16 hours per day.
This means that our BOOTS have to be the
most worn item when it comes to footwear. It
also means that our BOOTS have to be tough
enough to handle all the challenges we face
every day in our plants. After all, our BOOTS
are a vital part of our Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE).
So why should we care
about our BOOTS?

There is a saying that goes:
"If the shoe fits, wear it."
However, when it comes to your
BOOTS, a one-size-fits-all formula does
not apply. On an average day, our BOOTS

will absorb the force of our weight, and poor
choices of BOOTS can only lead to discomfort. High quality BOOTS are an investment
in how our body will feel later. Biomechanics
refers to the internal and external forces of the
human body, and the manner in which these
forces affect the human body. This means
every movement that your foot makes in the
act of walking affects other parts of your
body. If your BOOTS don't provide the necessary support for the arches and heels, they
prevent essential range of motion in the foot.
When your feet are not able to function properly, other parts of your body must overcompensate. When your body overcompensates,
it is common to suffer from pain in the heels,
ankles, knees, hips and lower back. The pain
in these joints can then lead to weakness and
further injury. So put your best BOOTS forward when it comes to your feet.
