water and wastewater facilities can help make the workplace safer and more
efficient. When pipes are clearly labeled, this helps with efficiency, along with fewer accidents
involving personnel injuries and damage to equipment. Representatives from 10 U.S. states and one
Canadian province have developed two major pipe marking standards. 1) Recommended Standards
for Wastewater Facilities and 2) Recommended Standards for Water Works. These are part of a set
of standards called the 10 State Standards. Each standard provides guidelines on how pipes should
be marked to improve efficiency and safety. By following these standards, facilities can remain
compliant with OSHA regulations and should follow the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME/ANSI A13.1) standard for pipe marking. This standard requires an employer to use labels to
state the contents of a pipe and what possible hazards are associated to that substance.
MARKING PIPES IN

The importance of labeling pipes

Basic pipe marker elements

Water and wastewater operators working in
a facility, visitors and emergency responders
cannot easily see what flows through a pipe.
This problem can lead to dangerous situations.
Pipes might be misidentified, or someone might
not consider the hazards related to a particular
substance because they do not know the possible
hazards present. Improperly labeled pipes can
compromise the efficiency of the workplace. For
example, during repairs, employees may need
to spend extra time figuring out what travels
through different pipes.

These are the five elements that make an effective pipe label:
1. Color Coding: This helps workers to quickly
identify the general pipe contents and potential hazards.
2. Text: This identifies the pipe's exact contents
and displays other hazards such as temperature or pressure.
3. Arrows: Indicate the flow direction, including
when contents may flow in either direction.
4. Label placement: Ensures the operators will
see the label and be able to access the information need with minimum effort.
5. Size: Choosing the right size label and text
ensures pipe markers can be read.
Placement of labels and labeling
all pipes

The first step of proper pipe labeling is to
understand where labels are needed in the facility. There are four main places for pipe markers:
1. Every 25' to 50' along straight runs
2. At all changes in direction (on both sides of
the turn)
3. At both sides of entry points through floors
and walls
4. Next to all flanges and valves
