MLINE * Fall 2017

Pipe marking labels should be positioned in such a way that they are visible
from most operators' line of sight. A
few guidelines about visibility/placement are:
* The label should be visible from the
point of normal approach
* The label should be visible at every
entry point in the floor or the wall
* When a pipe is located below normal
line of sight, put the label above the
pipe's horizontal centerline
* When a pipe is located above normal
line of sight, put the label below the
pipe's horizontal centerline
The next step ASME/ANSI pipe marking standards recommend is to label all
pipes under the following circumstances:
* Pipes that contain hazardous
substances
* Contents of pipes that could impact
emergency procedures
* Flow direction or destination of contents is unknown
* Maintenance requires that valve(s) be
shut off or flow be redirected
As with any workplace, effective
communication is an essential part of
day-to-day operations for operators.
Labeling of pipes is a critical part of
workplace communication and helps
meet the requirements for communicating hazards in the workplace. To keep
water and wastewater treatment facilities
operating in peak conditions, workers
have to perform regular maintenance
tasks. Properly marked pipes improve

efficiency, having information located
at the point of use reduces errors and
mistakes caused by not knowing what's
in each pipe.
If we are facing in the right direction,
all we have to do is keep on walking.
