Yardstick - Issue 4 2017 - 49
[ CHAIR'S MESSAGE ]
By Mark Westrum
GOOD DAY AND I hope this finds you in a busy selling season. I want to start by
expressing my sympathies to the people, communities and businesses in British Columbia
who have been affected by the devastation of the wild fires. The WRLA Board and Team and
I are thinking of you and wish you the best during this difficult time.
An update on the Canadian Retail Building Supply Council (CRBSC) - Since the exit of the
Quebec association (AQMAT) from the council, the remaining members met in Montreal on
June 22, 2017; the meeting was one of our best to date, and all parties left with a clear direction
and list of objectives. The CRBSC is working on rebranding itself and changing our name,
we hope to announce the change in the near future. With our rebranding,
we will focus more on working with an advocacy group so that we have
connections in Ottawa when needed, additionally we plan on launching
a new website and careers portal. The members of the council have a
renewed enthusiasm to act as your voice on a national level and we ask
that you stay tuned for updates.
Some noteworthy, and time sensitive, announcements - The
deadline for the WRLA Bursaries has past, but there is still
time to submit an application for one of the seven $3,000
scholarships that the WRLA presents each year. Deadline for
the application is October 6th, 2017.
We're also looking for nominations for the WRLA
Industry Achievement Award. This award is our
association's greatest honour. If you know someone who
has contributed to their business, the building supply
industry, the WRLA and their community, please
nominate them. The nomination form is available
online at www.wrla.org. The deadline for entry is
September 2nd, 2017.
Fall is also WRLA's education season. Investing in
your employees will pay dividends in the long run. The
WRLA offers a wide variety of estimating, safety
and yard management courses. Please visit the WRLA.
org website to see when and where these courses will be
offered. You won't regret it!
Finally, registration will be open soon for the 2018
Buying Show in Calgary. This year the WRLA team has
negotiated significantly better room rates at specific host
hotels, the hotels that we partner with contribute to your
membership year-round and it's important that you book
with a hotel that supports your association. You will be able
to book directly with the host hotels, through the WRLA
website under Buying Show. Along with deep discounts on
accommodations, the new WRLA team is bringing some
enhancements to the show; you'll have to watch for more
details! Please come out and support the industry's vendors
and help keep this show one of the best in Canada.
Thanks for listening to my meanderings and I
wish you a good day, and good selling.. ❱
