dossier GrANdes écoles internationalization How it changes educational trends For two years now, ESSEC has been partnering with five of the world’s leading business schools as part of the Council on Business and Society, underlining how management institutions have turned into global players. Three of the Global Alliance’s Deans explain how internationalization has changed educational trends in their country. Professor Xiongwen Lu Dean of School of Management Fudan University (China) Major progress over three decades Business education in most Chinese universities has a history of 20 to 30 years. We recently made significant progress in faculty development and research competence. More and more scholars published their research in some top-tier international academic journals. Majority of local schools have followed international standards. GAP : research strength & resources Comparing to the developed countries’ level, however, we seem to be lagged behind. The gap is not only reflected by the fundamental theoretical research but also by the resources and the attraction of academic talents. Great regional variations remain between our business schools. We are not competent enough yet to meet the huge, national demand of management talents. 54 Thoughts about future way out In the past, China’s economic development mode was extensive, so was the business education. We learned from the benchmark peers in the developed countries, but kept it at a mechanical copy level. Today, can we create our own characteristics and develop our own competiveness ? China has to pursue a sustainable development path combining internationalization and localization. In the next decade, our economy will maintain its fast-speed growth, needing senior managers with both local insights and global perspectives. Many believe that a lot of « findings » can be made from the China miracle, and long for experience summaries to guide the multinational companies in our country. Responsibilities of Chinese scholars Many Chinese challenges cannot be covered by western theories and experiences. We should become more initiative and active to conduct relevant research. This is not only our comparative advantage, but also our mission and duty. Globalization In the last thirty years, we have seen an amazing growth in new business schools around the world, and a refocusing of the long-established schools on what it takes to educate a global leader. Increasingly, multinational faculties, exchanges and more expose students to different cultures and business practices. The unanswered question now is : will the top schools create multiple campuses around the world ? Digitalization Communications technology may allow schools to reach world-wide without having to relocate. We all are experimenting with digital technology and blended learning.
