4.4 Introduction to teaching in higher education 4.3 Joint doctoral supervision Joint doctoral supervision is a widespread practice which consists of sharing the scientific supervision of a doctoral project between the official research director and another researcher or lecturer-researcher, whether or not this latter is accredited to supervise research, and can prove particularly advantageous for the doctoral student. It usually improves the quality of supervision because of the complementary nature of the two supervisors, and when two research subjects are at the interface of several disciplines, this joint supervision can, for example, bring together experts in each of the disciplines concerned. There are also cases of international joint supervision, (‘co-tutelle’), for which joint doctoral supervision is stipulated in the regulations. The overall supervision of a doctoral project is never delegated. This responsibility must remain that of an experienced researcher who has been accredited for research supervision. Strictly speaking, supervision includes an important element of management, e.g. management of time, means, and partnerships, endorsement of the aims and results, and discussion of the results exploitation strategy. This supervisory role is that of the director of doctoral research. If joint doctoral supervision is being considered, it is necessary for the sharing of this role be formalised very precisely during the drawing-up of the doctoral project, and therefore before the recruitment of the doctoral student. The joint supervisor may possibly not be authorised to supervise research, but they must: 1. be a researcher with tenure as they must be able to ensure their supervisory duties throughout the period of the doctorate; 2. to have enough experience to be considering preparation for accreditation for research supervision. (Work as a joint supervisor can therefore be one of the contributing factors in the preparation of this accreditation). The Higher Education Initiation ‘moniteur’ system was created in order to offer students preparing a thesis a 3-year introduction to the profession of lecturer-researcher. It constitutes a real preparation for the work involved in the post of lecturer-researcher. From September 2009, the ‘moniteur’ system is being integrated into the doctoral contract. The training and coordination of the ‘moniteur’ are provided by the 14 Centres d'Initiation à l'Enseignement Supérieur (CIES), which are spread all over France and which are instrumental in the training of about 1,600 ‘moniteurs’ every year. The main collective objective of this system is to create a breeding ground of potential candidates for posts of higher education lecturers. Although in no way does this involve pre-recruitment for these posts, the advantages of the ‘moniteur’ system are far from negligible as far as the start of a career is concerned. Training for the job of a university lecturer-researcher Training takes place at the same time as the ‘moniteur’’s research work and is essentially based on two parts: >> General training for the profession of university lecturer-researcher >> Introduction by practice For this introduction to teaching in higher education, the ‘moniteur’ benefits from the supervision of a teaching tutor. This is always a lecturer-researcher with tenure chosen by the ‘moniteur’, and who is usually in the teaching team in which the ‘moniteur’ is working. On no account can the tutor also be the ‘moniteur’’s doctoral supervisor. They act as a teaching advisor during the early stages of the ‘moniteur’’s teaching experience, helping them to prepare and assess their lectures and being available for help and advice if the ‘moniteur’ encounters any teaching-related problem. The start of a career In the case of subsequent recruitment as a university lecturer, the work placement period will be reduced to one year (instead of two) and the granting of tenure will directly take place on the 2nd grade of the university teachers’ salary scale provided that the person concerned has worked as a ‘moniteur’ for three years. The starting salary will thus be >Lœ Õ Ì Ê Ó ]£ ä ä Êi Õ À œ Ê} À œ à à ʫ i À Ê“ œ ˜ Ì … ° Contact your doctoral schools for further information p.6-11 It should be noted that for students who have passed the ‘agrégation’ competitive examination, the first two years as a ‘moniteur’ enable the ‘agrégation’ to be validated.
