Le magazine du trésorier - n°67 - 3ème trimestre 2009 - (Page 3)

Will 2009 be the year of talent in finance? Many signs point to this. According to various head-hunter firms, 2009, more than ever, will be the year of the search for "management talent". Corporations, entangled in this worldwide financial and economic crisis, have begun to attach greater value to the human factor. Has the "who" not become more important than the " how " and the "why " ? Incompetence may prove fatal in these troubled times when the ability to attract competent and skilled people is of utmost importance. There is indeed an array of skills available but do these skills meet the needs of modern corporations? Will the battle be focused on attracting the "adequate" talent that will fully assume the functions and duties defined by his/her Management. Talent will of course be required, but in the first place, adequate talent, neither oversized, nor undersized. With the current limited means available to companies, the right choice has become even more important and it may well become necessary to rely on qualified recruitment agencies. It will be necessary to promote "employer branding" of companies and recruit more young talents having finished high school or university. Companies will have to anticipate their future needs and the qualities required for the new tasks to be addressed. They have a real challenge ahead of them! Generational cohabitation seems to be another challenge that must be tackled.A young CEO will probably want to "rejuvenate" his employee base. Is this not a natural and human inclination, for lack of being recommended and advisable behaviour? Such intergenerational conflicts and the shock waves they produce must be avoided. In fact, it will be necessary to facilitate the dialogue between the different generations and to lean on the experience of former employees in order to strengthen and consolidate the know-how of a corporation and to make it stand out from its competitors. Finally, the controlling and risk management functions, which are not very sought after, are being revalued and have come to take centre stage, because of or thanks to the worldwide financial and economic crisis. These functions are undergoing a transition from "back-office" to "front-office" level. The burden of the various regulations will continue to increase. These high responsibility positions, little known or valued and having little recognition at an internal level, will gain in importance and esteem and will be more appreciated than this was the case in the past. The functions of the "Chief Risk Officer", but also that of the treasurer, will become key functions – their holders reliable and more proactive business partners who are supposed to bring high added value to corporations. Management will help to revalue jobs in risk monitoring and management. These positions have been underestimated all too long, but for the wrong reasons. Let's hope that the current crisis will provide a magnificent opportunity to rehabilitate and reposition these roles within the Finance Departments of international corporations. F. Masquelier Chairman of ATEL 3 EDITORIAL "Treasury Got Talent"
