INTERVIEW TROUSSEL talks openly The Transat AG2R, the Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro, the BPE Trophy: at the age of 33, Nicolas Troussel has already won the major events of the twelve open to a Figaro racer, which clearly makes him an exceptional yachtsman… Coming from Morlaix Bay, as others come from the Vallée des Fous (Port-La-Forêt in Southern Brittany), he is like his old mates, Armel Le Cléac’h and Jérémie Beyou one of the many youngsters, who have already acquired a rich experience, which should ensure some great successes tomorrow. Interview. If you want to understand his beginnings, you need to start by talking about Morlaix Bay, where he grew up and to which he is deeply attached. It also means you need to understand the local geography, which has influenced the way he handles the helm. “The Optimist wasn’t very common around here, when I was young. There were a few of them, but on the other side of the river,” he explained. “And anyway, I wasn’t really the right size, as I was a bit too heavy for them.” Nicolas spent a lot of time playing tennis, and at the age of 15 got his hands on a Corsaire, on board which he willingly spent his two months summer holiday, which was a privilege for him as he could freely sail up, down and around the whole bay by himself or with two or three friends… «I lived in my boat, and could do what I wanted. In the winter I got her ready. That also taught me how to do DIY, and I took part in training races in Morlaix. There were also a few races – the Tresco, the NICOLAS TROUSSEL is a nice lad. In the Harbour Bar in Diben, in Plougasnou, no one would say the contrary, and every single client comes to shake his hand before they sit down. We’re not talking about some local hero – even if no one here can ignore his successes – and it is not to curry favour as he so naturally acknowledges everyone’s presence or offers a polite “How are you doing?” He’s quite simply a lad in his hometown enjoying himself, not far from the Rolland boatyard, where he was busy working on his racing yacht before taking some time out to have this little chat. Whilst his recent achievements in the major races in the Figaro circuit have meant that he is often having a microphone thrust in front of him, his reputation as a quiet chap is not fully deserved. Just a question of atmosphere and pressure… A Corsaire with two or three friends Ocean Racing - june 2007
