EQUIPMENT A SECOND SKIN Tribord’s DG 500 suit was designed with young dinghy and catamaran sailors in mind. It offers even greater comfort and protection. In fact, additional protection is offered around the tibia, knees and buttocks, which are areas that suffer a lot when sailing. It affords an extraordinary level of comfort thanks to its Thermospan-lined chest and anti-wind chill outer fabric.… no more suffering from the cold due to the wind-chill factor. The real advantage is that Tribord analysed the movements of the human body during a sailing session. The suit offers considerable freedom of movement to enable the body to move around freely, which is of the utmost importance in a dinghy and catamaran. QUITE SIMPLY EFFICIENT As lightness was not always a feature of truly efficient marine wear, it is therefore with great pleasure that we announce the arrival of new materials bringing protection and weight reductions. This is the case for the Offshore Defender suit from Prorainer, which offers an intelligent mixture of modern fabrics and a well designed shape. The T-Core LX is a waterproof membrane with three layers but which allows breathing, while remaining incredibly supple to the touch and can easily be forgotten thanks to its very reduced weight. Moreover, the upper part covering the chest is particularly appreciated, with the elastic part behind the back, and is made of windproof and warming Softshell. The result is the Defender suit means you can easily go without a jacket when sailing in the Bay. We tested it on a sunny day when the wind was blowing (18 to 23 knots) and its efficient protection around the body was truly appreciated. You can add to that the comfort that comes from the lightness of the clothes, so you can easily understand why it is so successful. KEYWORD - SIMPLICITY The Bokven jacket by TBS is ideal for short trips or for those chilly evenings after sailing. A special fit and 3-layers of cloth – an exclusive breathable membrane called Technisyntex – make it a garment that is at the same time comfortable and technical, also offering thanks to its many clips and zips a wide range of adjustment possibilities. The breast pocket, which can be closed to become waterproof is an additional useful feature. ULTRA LIGHT INSHORE WEAR Tested at sea during the Multihull Trophy in Lorient, the new «Velocity» collection from Henri Lloyd designed in collaboration with the crew of the Class America boat, BMW Oracle Racing, has shown itself to be well suited to their programme of inshore races. David Brooke (mastman), Craig Monk (grinder) and Ross Halcrow (trimmer) worked together to draw up the specifications and the British manufacturer used two new materials: Alpha TP2, which offers weight reductions, while remaining perfectly waterproof with a low level of condensation, and Keprotec, a Kevlar taffeta already used by motor-cyclists. The outfit is therefore extremely light offering remarkable efficiency in terms of protection. The additional protection is well placed (just like on a jacket at the level of the buttocks), two jacket pockets, one on the overalls, which come up above the chest. The only snags: the jacket collar is not adjustable to limit infiltration of water… and the choice of white, which gets dirty quickly. However for day races, its lightness and looseness are major assets for these clothes. AIMING TO OFFER PROTECTION The Sail model from the French manufacturer Julbo has the unique feature of all-over protection thanks to its wide arms, and moreover has «Ab-Shock temples» (elastomer protection in a c-shape around the temples) for maximum protection. SAIL is available with lenses combining two technologies in a single lens: polarising (anti-glare) and photochromic (changes from category 3 to 4 according to the intensity of the light.) We can add that they have been treated to be hydrophobic. POWER AUTONOMY Navicarte is now offering a new range of portable, shock-resistant solar panels, which are capable of supplying power to a host of personal electronic devices (GPS, telephone, MP3 player, PDA etc.) Two models are available: the Solaruno with an output of 0.5W is equipped with a battery charger for LR03 batteries; the Solarmio (photo), which folds in three in a pouch, is fitted with anchor points and attachments (power 1.5W with rechargeable battery). When you see how much sunshine is available when you are at sea, even in partly overcast weather, the device is clearly attractive, particularly because any solution reducing the need to recycle traditional batteries would appear to be a good one.
