PEOPLE FEBRUARY 2007 Michael Clausecker - UNIFE (Belgium) On February 1, Michael Clausecker took up the role of director general of the European Railway Industry Association (UNIFE). André Navarri, chairman of UNIFE, welcomed the new appointment. “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Clausecker as director general of UNIFE,” he said. “Michael will contribute his extensive experience of the rail industry, gained with Bombardier Transportation and Siemens TS, and as managing director of the German Railway Industry Association (VDB).” The presiding board and Drewin Nieuwenhuis have mutually agreed to end their partnership. The board thanks Mr Nieuwenhuis for his contribution to the development of UNIFE and welcomes Mr Clausecker to his new role. two years in the UK, including 12 months working on a light rail tunnel project in London, prior to relocating to Brussels. Olivier Marembaud - SNCF Freight (France) Olivier Marembaud has replaced Marc Véron as assistant general manager, SNCF Fret. Mr Marembaud, 54, has spent his whole career at the SNCF, after graduating from Ecole Supérieure des Mines, Nancy. In 1993, he was named assistant director for regional action, then in 1996, became cabinet secretary for new president of the SNCF, Loïk le Floch Prigent. In 1997, he was director, then CEO, of Frantour, and in 1999, director of regional and local public transport. In June 2000, he was CEO of Via Cariane, then of Keolis, where he remained until 2005. Hubert du Mesnil - RFF (France) On February 28, the French Council of Ministers appointed Hubert du Mesnil president of Réseau Ferré de France. He had already been appointed executive director representing the French state on February 24. From 1993 to 1995, Mr du Mesnil was responsible for ports and maritime navigation at the French Ministry for Equipment and Transport, and then went on to take charge of terrestrial transport from 1995 to 2001. From 2001 to 2005, he was CEO of Aéroports de Paris, becoming CEO of RFF in November 2005. NOVEMBER 2006 New appointments at FTA (UK) Christopher Snelling has joined the Freight Transport Association (FTA) as head of rail freight and global supply chain logistics policy. After working at the House of Commons, Christopher was a public affairs consultant with APCO UK from 1998 to 2005, followed by a spell as public affairs manager at RAC/Norwich Union. He will be responsible for all rail, maritime and aviation policy matters, plus related transport buyer issues, and reports to Chris Welsh, FTA’s general manager, policy campaigns. Chris MacRae, who joined FTA in 1993, becomes manager of rail freight and global supply chain logistics policy, reporting to Mr Snelling. In addition to rail, maritime and aviation policy matters, Chris will retain his existing responsibilities for dangerous goods policy, both at home and abroad, and will also take charge of transport health and safety policy. JANUARY 2007 Helene Köpf - UNIFE (Belgium) On February 1, Helene Köpf joined UNIFE as international affairs manager. She takes over coordination of the InteGRail project from Minna Melleri, and will also be in charge of drafting proposals for research projects in FP 7. Helene graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, in 2005, with a degree in economic geography, business administration and transport planning. During her studies she gained experience in the rail transport sector with internships at Deutsche Bahn AG and Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft. After graduating, she worked for 18 months for a start-up coordinating renewable energy projects. Here, she was in charge of sourcing vegetable oils for power plants driven by bio fuels. Francis Nakache - EuRailCo (France) On January 1, Francis Nakache was named director general of EuRailCo. He takes charge of the group’s three structures (French, British and German). Mr Nakache, 52, began his career at Matra Transport, where he held the posts of project head and general coordinator for all VAL projects. He then ran various companies, in France, the UK and Ireland, providing facility management and air-harbor services. Since 2005, he was development director at EuRailCo. DECEMBER 2006 Marc Falchi - ERFCP (Europe) Hartmut Mehdorn - UIC (France) CEO of German Rail (DB), Hartmut Mehdorn has been elected chairman of the new European Regional Assembly of the International Union of Railways (UIC). Mr Mehdorn was unanimously elected by the Assembly, which the UIC has set up to organise collaborative projects between its 104 European members. The Assembly has also appointed three vice-chairpeople – Anne-Marie Idrac, CEO of French National Railways; Bert Klerk, chief executive of Dutch infrastructure authority ProRail and chairman of the European Infrastructure Managers Association (EIM); and Aad Veenman, chief executive of Netherlands Railways (NS) and chairman of the Community of European Railways (CER). UIC regional assemblies will be created for Africa, the Middle East, Asia, North and South America. Marc Falchi has replaced Klaus Meyer as secretary general of the European Rail Freight Customer Platform (ERFCP). Mr Falchi has been a senior advisor at European Infrastructure Managers (EIM) for the past two years, and acting secretary general since September 2004. He spent the previous 30 years with French National Railways (SNCF) and French Rail Network (RFF). Following a long career in the railway sector, Mr Falchi was most recently secretary general at EIM, and currently works for UK consultancy firm Steer Davies Gleave. SEPTEMBER 2006 Richard Goldson - ORR (UK) Richard Goldson, OBE, has joined the board of the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) as a non-executive director. He will take up his post on October 2. Mr Goldson is retiring from his current role as director of National Express Group responsible for regulatory affairs, competition issues and new rail business. His appointment fills the vacancy created when Chris Stokes decided not to seek reappointment at the end of his original term. Says Chris Bolt, chairman of ORR, “I look forward to working with Richard. I know he will bring with him a wealth of railway knowledge which will add to the breadth of experience already reflected in the Board. He is well placed to take over from Chris Stokes, who we thank for his contribution over the past two years.” Says Richard, “I am looking forward to joining the ORR board at a particularly important time, and hope that my wide industry experience will be of value as we tackle the issues ahead.” Mr Goldson, a career railway man, was awarded the OBE in 1996 for services to the railway industry. The Board of the Office of Rail Regulation has five non-executives and two executive members, including the chief executive and chairman. Appointments to the Board are for a fixed term of up to five years Andras Siegler - DG RTD (Europe) Andras Siegler is the newly appointed director for transport at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Technological Development (DG RTD). Mr Siegler has taken over the role from Jack Metthey, who in turn has taken up a new post at the European Research Council (ERC). Mr Siegler is not new to DG RTD - he was previously director for international cooperation. Prior to joining the European Commission two years ago, he worked for the Hungarian government in the fields of science and technology, and previously, spent a number of years at the Computer and Automation Research Institute at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Michael Bayley - UNIFE (Belgium) Michael Bayley has joined UNIFE as international technical affairs manager. He is responsible for current and future infrastructure research projects and will play a technical role in infrastructure committees. Michael has an honours degree in civil engineering from Melbourne, Australia, plus four and a half years’ experience as a structural designer, working for multi-discipline, heavy civil engineering projects.
