Five Principal Research Themes at HEC ‘Capitalizing on our strengths’ • Leadership and Decision-Making • Innovation Management • Growth Strategies • Corporate Social Responsibility • Financial Markets and Information In the context of the fundraising campaign launched by the Foundation, HEC has defined five principal research themes in order to increase the number of publications by its professors, further develop its collaboration with the business world, and increase the school's sphere of influence. The aim is for HEC to become one of the five leaders in management research in Europe within the next couple of years. The chief characteristic of these five key themes is that they all constitute existing strengths at HEC, and rely on existing teams. The aim, therefore, is to capitalize on these strengths by concentrating on the recruitment of senior researchers. We have deliberately chosen transversal themes because the decompartmentalization of subject areas will give HEC a huge advantage over its immediate competitors. HEC will not, however, abandon other areas of research, will continue to allocate the necessary funds to ensure their continuity, and will remain open to suggestions for other themes. Marc Vanhuele, Associate Professor of Marketing, (Associate Dean for Research) and Director of Research, GREGHEC (CNRS) Recently published research: Loss Aversion and Decision-Making by Mohammed Abdellaoui (see research@hec No. 3). Recently published research: Radical Innovations in Major Companies by Sihem Jouini (see research@hec No. 3) Recently published research: Measuring Market Risks in Banks by Christophe Pérignon (see research@hec No. 2) Our aim: We intend to increase research into the theme of leadership, the science of decision making, and game theory. Senior researchers will be recruited to achieve this goal. The MBA programme is an important vector of development for this theme through the ‘Visions of Leadership’ centre, which receives financial support from L’Oréal. The centre runs numerous seminars and courses that address the theme of leadership. Our aim: The idea—apart from publishing the research—is to develop scientific and technical partnerships with ParisTech. This theme will also facilitate the implementation of applied research projects, such as theses, training, and student projects, like the creation of start-ups by the HEC incubator or the launch of innovative products and services for companies. Our aim: We will study companies’ external growth strategies (mergers and acquisitions, partnerships) by extending the work undertaken in the framework of the Atos Origin Chair. The study of the problems of internal growth will be linked to the theme of ‘Managing Innovation’. There are plans to recruit researchers. research hec Our aim: We intend to recruit junior and senior professors to ensure that HEC becomes one of the leading European centres in this field. This team has produced the most publications up to now. Several of its members participate in the competitive cluster ‘Finance Innovation’, including Thierry Foucault, who is a member of the management committee. BNP Paribas finances a research Centre on hedge funds, which is directed by David Thesmar. Hervé Stolowy is a member of the examining committee for the European Commission’s accounting norms. Our aim: We will develop the academic foundations for alternative business models in order to combat poverty and protect the planet against ecological degradation. HEC is already very active in this field. Mohammad Yunus, winner of the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize, and Martin Hirsch, French High Commissioner for Active Solidarity Against Poverty, jointly established a new Chair on ‘Social Business’ in May 2008. This initiative provided an opportunity to give our activity a formal structure. Two new Chairs are also being created. II research@hec • October-November 2008
