USERS’ PLATFORM Composites in the world Did I really go down that? In early 2008, EeDesign was approached by Composite Designs to design some highspecification staircases using carbon fibre. The aim was to promote the beauty and versatility of carbon fibre for use in yachts, planes and luxurious homes. The first two stairs are the simplest staircases EeDesign could design using carbon fibre. In the case of the spiral version, carbon fibre was used for the treads. The 4-mm-thick treads cantilever out 900 mm from the centre pole, with the glass balustrade fixed to the outer edge. Originally designed in timber, the straight staircase was adapted to use carbon fibre. This stair differs from the spiral as it is 100% supported by carbon fibre. The next wave of designs will be even more adventurous, exploiting the structural properties of carbon fibre, and pushing the boundaries of staircase design even further.
