COMPANIES COMPANIES JCM: Can you tell us more about Vestas R&D in Asia-Pacific? M. L.: Besides establishing a credible R&D team, Vestas Technology R&D adopts an open innovative approach towards research, focusing on promoting new collaborations with research institutions and universities. Till date, Vestas Technology R&D has already signed three local Master Research Agreements with Singapore universities and two regional Master collaboration agreements with China and Australia. These agreements cover a variety of fields such as advanced composites develop- ment, material fatigue studies, and applied research in sensor technology. JCM: What new challenges are you considering for the Singapore R&D centre? M. L.: Although there is no wind industry in Singapore, this does not mean we cannot find the talents here. A wind turbine generator is a multi-disciplined engineering machine, we need a variety of talents from all fields of science and engineering, such as power electronics, electrical engineering, material science, structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, hydraulics, signal processing, etc. to work together in an efficient and reliable manner. So far, we are able to find such talents from a rich and broad engineering-based cluster in Singapore and the surrounding countries, including the semi-conductors & electronics, industrial automation, aerospace and automotive industries. The regional R&D hub for Asia at Fusionopolis will thus enable Vestas to accelerate its capabilities in harnessing wind power, a highly viable solution to the world’s long-term energy demands.
