JCM: What are the main objectives and priorities of the association over which you preside? G.D.: The group has several goals: - Initiating innovation and development work enabling the needs of end users to be met by removing the technological barriers; this objective is a priority; - Mass-producing and marketing raw materials, semi-finished products and finished products; - Developing and sharing with members and partners the results of the work undertaken. JCM: Have you set yourself precise

deadlines in terms of getting your products to market? G.D.: We are targeting the first market launch by the end of 2010, in sectors such as transport, sports and leisure, and design. JCM: Are you targeting particular application sectors, and if so, why? G.D.: Sooner or later, all the sectors of application for composites may be envisaged. The specifications coming from the clients will determine the priorities. Flax fibre has a natively low density (1.53*), even less than the density of glass fibre (2.54*). The first practical

applications will address the need to produce lighter reinforcement structures in order to increase the range of electrical vehicles, trains, and the like, thereby contributing to a reduced carbon footprint through the integration of bio-sourced products. JCM: Do you envisage approaching or collaborating with other organisations dedicated to natural fibres, or opening up the association to other companies? G.D.: Absolutely. Inauguration of the Duqueine Site Airbus A350 XWB Duqueine Rhône-Alpes is officially inaugurating its new design and manufacturing site for structural composite parts for the Airbus A350 XWB. Based in Reyrieux, France, the 2,500-m² facility is dedicated to fuselage and window frames. will all rally behind the project. www.duqueine.fr/uk/index.html opened a new pilot facility to manufacture carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at Chempark Leverkusen, Germany. The company invested some EUR 22 million in the planning, development and construction of the facility, which is the largest of its kind in the world and has an annual capacity of 200 metric tons. www.bayermaterialscience.com

ABMACO and IPT start a composite recycling programme The Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) have entered into an agreement to start ABMACO’s National Recycling Programme. The project aims to develop tools for reusing composite waste in the production process. According to ABMACO’s estimates, the Brazilian composite sector generates approximately 18,000 metric tons of waste every year, representing an expenditure of US$ 66 million, with disposal in Class 2 landfills. Premium Aerotec in Augsburg receives autoclave for fuselage structure of A350 XWB Premium Aerotec is gearing up for series production of the new A350 XWB long-haul aircraft. The autoclave, 25 metres long and eight metres high in diameter, has been delivered to the plant in Augsburg. Premium Aerotec is the world’s largest supplier of fuselage structures for the A350 XWB. Total investment at Premium Aerotec for this future generation of aircraft amounts to around €360 million; as announced on the 23rd of February 2010. www.premium-aerotec.com

The site will operate for a period of 2 years until the 8,000-m² building scheduled for construction in 2011 is ready in Civrieux. This second, larger production site will be built by the Saône Valley community of towns and will accommodate large series as of 2012.
