A fire retardant resin and gelcoat system that could be used in infusion
processing of high speed fast interceptor craft meeting regulations
Many companies are now very concerned
about safety (related to fire) at sea. However,
it is very hard to produce a system for small
crafts as there is lack of space for firefighting
equipment as well as the weight-issue related
to overall vessel performance. This resin provides the vessel laminates with full FST of
the laminates so the vessel will resist burning
and the structure will not fail at sea.
The product brief was given by CCg
engineers to Vee-Tek epoxy manufacturing
to develop a resin that would easily infuse
as well as a gel-coat that could be applied
to mould tooling by rolling or spraying.
The trails where carried out both in lab and

on samples panels and then geared up to
full size military vessels. As all countries in
the area have important requirements to
increase the military upgrade and policing
vessels there is a high demand for such a
product as hand lamination can be done
leaving lower strength and heavier designs
available. This allows for advanced engineered laminates to be used in Arimd and
Carbon fibre cores designs. The key benefits
of this innovation are extremely high mechanical properties with full FST capability and
very light and strong uses with advanced
engineered laminates. The cost of the resin
is no more expensive than normal epoxy

The first sustainable natural fibre reinforced composite
small wind turbine blade
A 3.5 meter long rotor blade, suitable for an
11kW small wind turbine, has been manufactured using highly renewable flax fabric
reinforcements. To improve blade efficiency
and sustainability, the blade shape has been
aerodynamically optimized using in-house
design software (bladeShaper v2.0). For
improved durability, a UV stable unsaturated polyester is used as the matrix material.
The blade consists of a CNC machined
core and multi-axial flax fabric reinforced
polyester. The blade weighs 23kg, of which
4.2kg is accounted by flax fibre, at a nominal
fibre volume fraction of ~36%. resin impregnation and blade consolidation is achieved
through a two-stage light resin transfer
moulding (LrTM) process; infusion and
cure-cycle times are 1.5 hours and 2 hours,
respectively. A low post-curing temperature
(of 40 °C) and short cure-cycle time results
in low energy consumption during blade
production. Structural integrity analysis and

mechanical tests, in accordance to certification standards have demonstrated that that
manufactured flax blade passes both normal
operation (at average wind speeds) and
severe loads (at extreme gust wind speeds)
criteria, including design fatigue loads over
the required 25-year design life.
The primary value created by the use of
composite materials in the novel natural
fibre rotor blade is improved sustainability
and environmental credentials. Flax reinforcements provide several benefits other
than improved composite sustainability.
For instance, in comparison to an identical
construction E-glass blade, the flax blade
also provides 10% weight savings (45%
fibre mass savings). This is because flax has
roughly half the density of E-glass. Furthermore, the flax blade may provide potential
cost savings, considering economics of scale,
as although raw flax fibre costs approximately the same as E-glass fibre, the flax blade

resins, making it extremely competitive and
adding additional value to the end product
at the same time.

developed natural fibre blade creates a new
niche market, in the expanding small wind
energy sector, that will continue to grow
with the public’s environmental concerns
and the wind industry’s pursuit in developing eco-friendly material technologies.
