$55-million to turn biomass into
plastics and composites
Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC),
announced the launch of the Industrial
Biomaterials program, an initiative that
will help create more fuel-efficient vehicles
and greener construction materials.
The Industrial Biomaterials program is a
$55-million initiative over five years consisting of a $30 million investment by the
NRC, and $25 million generated through
collaborative projects with industry, academic institutions and other government
departments.

Quickstep signs $75million deal
The company announced that it has signed
a memorandum of agreement (MOA)
with the global security and aerospace
company, Lockheed Martin for the manufacture and delivery of 120 sets of C‐ 130J
carbon‐fibre wing flaps through 2018 at a
rate of approximately 24 sets per year.
Each shipset includes four carbon fibre
wing flaps. Each flap contains more than
200 individual parts including carbon ribs,
spars and skins; more than 200 tools are
used for the parts' development and manufacture. The wing flaps are expected to be
delivered at a rate of approximately two
sets per month beginning January 2014.

strategic collaboration
The companies are exploring opportunities to support the ongoing development of the aerostructures industry in
the emirate of Abu Dhabi in the UAE. This
includes evaluating the creation of prepreg
manufacturing capabilities in the emirate,
with the commitment of major aircraft
OEMS to provide the requisite assistance
and qualifications.

AnalySwift partners with Altran for
design of composite wind turbine
The company, a provider of modeling software for aerospace and energy composites

it has partnered with Altran in the release
of Altran's upcoming optimization code for
the preliminary design of composite wind
turbine blades.
The technology underlying VABS renders
it efficient high‐fidelity modeling tool for
composite slender structures, saving users
many orders of magnitude in computing
time relative to more complex and time‐
consuming 3D finite element analyses
(FEA), without a loss of accuracy.

Boeing to expand aviation training
in Russia
The training facility will be located in
the Skolkovo Innovation Center in
Moscow. Initial capability will include
flight, maintenance and specialty
training. Local maintenance training will
be available across the spectrum of Boeing
aircraft currently in operation, and flight
training capability will include locally
based instructors.

Plastic Omnium expands
its presence in China
The company has inaugurated an automotive development center for its exterior
parts business in the Chinese city of Anting, 30 kilometers from Shanghai. The new
center whose current staff of 300 engineers
and technicians could expand to 450 by
2016. In 2013, Plastic Omnium launched
35 new exterior parts programs for 18 different customers in China.
Through the YFPO joint venture coowned with Chinese partner Yanfeng-SAIC, Plastic Omnium is presently developing around 100 new programs, mainly
concerning bumpers. These production
facilities generate more than €500 million
in total revenue and contribute €300 million to consolidated company revenue.
