which it was cut - the remaining 90%
being scrap material (that can be
recycled, but with lower value). Composites have a buy-to-fly ratio that is 50%
lower than aluminium - and even less
with automated processes such as AFP
where the material is placed directly
where needed so there is very little scrap.

Prepregs for other industries
Early applications for prepregs were not
limited to the aerospace industry. The
sports and leisure industry was quick
to adopt them for the manufacture of
lightweight, performance-enhancing
tennis racquets, golf shafts and skis. Hexcel developed a range of America's cup
prepregs for competition yachts, while
investments in high-speed rail networks
created opportunities for prepregs in
high-speed train structures, such as
drivers' cabs. In cars, where Hexcel's
involvement began with the introduction of the first prepregs for Formula 1
racing in the 1980's, there is a clear trend
towards lighter, safer cars with enhanced
performance and reduced emissions.

outstanding visual appeal.
Automotive is one of its key markets
for development, together with marine,
sports equipment, alternative energy
and wind energy.

Snap cure for
high-volume structures
In an ongoing commitment to extend
the applications for composites, Hexcel
has developed a new prepreg that breaks
through the 5-minute cure barrier.
HexPly® M77 cures in just 2 minutes at
150°C and has a shelf life of 6 weeks at
room temperature. The prepreg has a Tg
of 120°C and good adhesive properties
for bonding to honeycomb or aluminium. This new prepreg is therefore
suitable for rapid production in large
volumes and is finding applications in
sports equipment and automotive parts.

Constant innovation
In the early 1980's, prepregs were considered specialty materials, accounting for
around 5% of an aircraft design and used
only for non-critical secondary structures. Today, prepregs are baseline for
aircraft primary structures and constitute more than 50% of the airframe of
the Airbus A350 XWB and Boeing 787.
Meanwhile, new markets continue to
open up, driven by the need for greater
efficiency, fuel savings and performance
improvements.

Low-temperature cure with low
exotherm for thick structures
HexPly® M79 is Hexcel's new low
temperature curing prepreg that cures in
just 4 hours at 80°C, or alternatively in
6 hours at 75°C. The system has a 60%
reduced risk of provoking an exothermal reaction than standard industrial
prepregs and benefits from a long outlife
of 6 weeks at room temperature. This
makes it ideal for the manufacture of
thick laminate sections such as wind turbine blades, for boat hulls and decks and
for yacht masts when reinforced with HS
or IM carbon fibre.
Hexcel´s innovative and patented carbon UD prepregs with Grid-Technology
allow very thick carbon laminates to be
manufactured by vacuum bag technology that have superior void-free quality,
thanks to the grid, which assists with
the removal or air during the cure cycle.
This technology has been certified by
Germanischer Lloyd for wind energy
applications and is also recommended
for yacht masts.
