Key evolutions in automated
weight-saving processes
From time immemorial, the flight of birds has fascinated mankind.
Since 1985, Mtorres has been developing weight-saving solutions
with the same fascination and passion in an attempt to make aviation easier.

In the early days, weight was reduced
by removing material from panels to
reach the right thickness. First, the
Torreslaser® and Torrestool®maskant
laser scriber machines were developed in an attempt to automate the
chemical milling process. A later
development was the Torres laser
welding system, which enabled a 15%
weight saving on fuselage panels by
automatically placing stringers in their
theoretical position on the panels,
followed by the Torres 3D surface mil-

machines for net trimming, ultrasonic
inspection for non-destructive testing
to automated assembly jigs, Mtorres
provides a comprehensive, productive

In particular, the company's lamination solutions encompass a unique
combination of successful processes,
using the best practices for fibres,
single tapes, multi-tapes or a combination of all three.

One of the largest commercial CFTP
structures - the Airbus A350 XWB
wing lower cover (dimensions 35m
x 7m) - is made at Airbus Illescas in
Spain, with single-tape technology,
using a 12-inch (305 mm) band
width. An upper cover with similar dimensions is manufactured by
Airbus Stade in Germany in a similar way. Single-tape technology is a
reliable technology that has evolved
with more technologically advanced
machines (multi-tape systems) or
solutions with interchangeable heads
that can be integrated in a flexible
environment, with or without cutting
machines for uncured composites, in
order to maximize output while reducing overall investment in clean-room
and material costs.

Optimizing deposition rate
with multi-tape technology
The multi-tape configuration always
lays up the equivalent of 6", 12" or 24"
(152.5, 305 or 610 mm) band width,
even when smaller tapes are used.
