The challenges are to simulate
structural behaviour and also to
understand the parameters that
influence the behaviour of an
elementary fibre.
Rupture of a flax/epoxy composite after fatigue testing
are no reference materials, i.e.
model materials with uniformly
distributed individualized fibres
without flaws (e.g. porosity or
misalignment). Other necessary information concerns the
reinforcement geometry, its
initial properties, the quality of the fibre/matrix bond,
the cell contents (whether or
not there is a lumen), and the
matrix properties. The specific
features of plant fibres that must
be taken into account are the
microstructure and composition of the supporting tissues
and whether or not a lumen and
bundles exist.
The recycling potential of
biocomposites has also been
studied (Bourmaud et al.,
2007), (Bourmaud et al., 2009),
(Bourmaud et al., 2011, and
now the recycling needs to be
studied in connection with
ageing. Biocomposites enable
a paradox: available, durable
materials that not only can be
recycled at the end of their
service life, but also are EOL
biocompostable (Le Duigou et
The long-term goal is to link the
properties of cellulose fibrils to
those of a complex structure, so
this means research at multiple
scales. One problem is acquiring
robust data that can be used for
simulation tools. We then hope
to simulate the effect of ageing,
the fire behaviour and, for
certain matrices, the biodegradation mechanisms.
Conclusion
This overview takes a look at a
given moment in time and is by
no means complete. Biocomposites are emerging materials
for which there are still many
issues, such as:

- fibre properties (origin, reproducibility, relevant parameters),
- fibre extraction and presentation, and processing the
composite while preserving cell
wall properties,
- the dispersion of fibres within
a polymer to create a durable,
high-performance composite
material (controlling things like
fibre distribution and orientation, wetout, or the fibre/matrix
bond) with one or more EOL
solutions,
- how to "think biocomposite"
by taking inspiration from
natural ecosystems. This entails
multi-scale and multidisciplinary approaches, as well as
taking the specific plant-fibre
properties into account and
ecodesigning with anisotropy
in mind,
- consistency in the use of plant
fibres as reinforcement (choice
of polymer and process, etc.). n
