The composite carbon/titanium
(CTi) fan system for the Advance
and UltraFan engine designs has
completed its phase of testing at
the company's outdoor jet engine test
facility at the John C. Stennis Space
Center in Mississippi.

US Energy Department announced $11 million for carbon
fiber production from biomass
The funds will be attributed to two
projects that aim to advance the
production of cost-competitive,
high-performance carbon fiber
material from renewable, non-foodbased feedstocks, such as agricultural
residues and woody biomass.
Southern Research Institute (SRI) of
Birmingham, Alabama will receive up
to $5.9 million to innovate on a multistep catalytic process for conversion
of sugars from non-food biomass to
acrylonitrile.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of Golden, Colorado will
receive up to $5.3 million to investigate and optimize multiple pathways
to bio-acrylonitrile.

Polystrand, Sanluis Rassini
and PPG create advanced automotive composite project
The partners are preparing a vehicle to compete in the Grand Touring Lite (GTL) classification in the
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
The goal of the GTL project is not
just to field a competitive racecar,
but also to showcase continuous fiber
thermoplastic composite technologies that can be applied to the automotive and transportation industry.
The vehicle provides a development
platform for complementary products and engineering concepts in
an organized program. The materials and applications focused on are
lightweight composite structural
components for chassis and suspension, interior and exterior panels,
aerodynamic aids and fire-resistant
materials.

Quatro Composites expands its
Orange City facility
The $11.8 million expansion project
will allow the company to take on
additional business opportunities,
in addition of its several contracts to
produce carbon composite structures
for the 787 Dreamliner airplane.
The expansion has added approximately 45,000 square feet and nearly
doubled the size of Quatro's corporate
and manufacturing facilities. 85 of
the 99 jobs expected to be created as
a result of the expansion have already
been filled.

Acquisition
The fan system undertook crosswind
testing on a Trent 1000 ALPS (Advanced Low Pressure System technology) engine, ahead of flight testing on
the Rolls-Royce 747 flying test bed
based in Tucson, Arizona.

Sigma expands with RMDG
acquisition
Sigma Components, the Aerospace
Division of Avingtrans plc, has acquired RMDG Aerospace Limited
in a deal with Tricorn Group plc valued at £1.1 million. Based in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, RMDG manufactures a range of rigid pipe assemblies
and precision aerospace components
for tier-one aerospace OEMs.
