HUTTON HOTEL Hutton: BY REBECCA GOLDBERG I t’s not just sustainable, it’s wellthought. It’s not just pretty, it's personal. The philosophy behind Hutton Hotel is to create an experience for guests that makes them feel good. As the hotel is green by design — and furnished with recycled, natural products that do not emit chemicals — this is as tangible as it is intangible. “We were approached with a project where the goal was to design a luxury property that is environmentally friendly and responsible in a realistic and attainable way,” said Dayna Lee, principal, PowerStrip Studio. The hotel is located in Nashville, Tenn. and is the first of its kind in the city. Nashville is the crossroads of the music world, and Lee admitted that she was surprised to hear how many major musicians have passed through the city (some regularly). She wanted to design a property that would make musicians feel at home, and give the community a proud place to hang its hat. Hear it. See it. Feel it. At the Crossroads of the Music World, Sits a Hotel that Bridges the Gap between Green and Luxury “Our eclectic American furnishings are set to tell more stories that a vintage guitar can tell,” she said. “The hotel is designed around the city it calls home.” It is also a landmark achievement in green design — despite not being LEED certified. “It was decided from the beginning of the project that there was more value in the recycled content materials, warm natural finishes and designer low-consumption plumbing fixtures than the price of documentation for LEED certification,” she said. “We applaud our owners to have established their priorities in making a healthy, warm, responsible hotel that has not sacrificed luxury.” Lee and her team at PowerStrip Studio have and do continue to work with other properties that meet LEED. Hutton did benefit from Lee’s experience with the LEED process. The money that would have paid for documentation was invested directly into the products and guest experience. Therefore, the design team had the ability to source green products and 38 • boutique DESIGN march/april 2009
