IN FOCUS the schnabel room at old homestead BY REBECCA GOLDBERG G Old Homestead and the cow that inspired Julian Schnabel len Coben knows restaurants. In addition to the restaurant projects that have propelled his career and his nine-year-old company (Glen and Company) in the New York design world, Coben pulls from his branding experience in his design work. He previously worked as a principal for the Rockwell Group, and as director of store design for Nike. In his design for Old Homestead — a Chelsea, New York — steakhouse, he re-created the historic brand in a quirky way. Believe it or not, the inspiration for the space’s private room came from a visit to New Jersey. Coben was invited by owner Marc Sherry to visit the Old Homestead in the Borgata. There, he saw photos taken by Julian Schnabel, a famous New York artist, filmmaker and designer of the Gramercy Park Hotel. The photos were of the famous Old Homestead cow that protrudes from the second floor of the restaurant in Chelsea. 26 • boutique DESIGN may/june 2009
