In trying to, my mind is flooded with memories: crayon drawings of parrots and the Little Mermaid, listening to the Yellow Submarine on repeat, starring in my third grade play, “Mexicali Soup,” watching eccentric movies (Labyrinth, The Princess Bride) that were beyond my age, wishing I could paint like that fluffy-haired man on TV (later to be discovered as Bob Ross.) I suppose different forms of art always captivated me — even before I knew they did or why. It wasn’t until college when I studied the arts in London, visiting museums and galleries weekly, seeing countless theatrical performances and simply being immersed in the culture of such an artistic city that I began to grasp what was so enthralling about this whole “art” thing. Surely you, as architects, designers and lovers of all things art, have similar memories: rearranging your bedrooms as a child on a monthly (perhaps weekly) basis building elaborate Lego resort developments, sitting in your first lecture hall hearing a professor drone on about the merits of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. Despite the abstruse reasons why we enjoy it, it’s easy to dial back to the simple elements that make art and culture so imperative to our everyday lives. For some, it may be about the inspiration the arts beget. Read our Inspiration article exploring the topic — one that is so indefinable yet endlessly interesting. Other times the effects of art and culture on our industry are more tangible, as displayed in this issue’s Designology piece, which explores hotels that function also as galleries. Few would argue a better means exists through which to explore arts and culture than travel…and travel we do in this month’s World by DESIGN feature, our second expedition into Western Europe. Our cover man, Adam Tihany, has a lengthy history of appreciation for the arts in all of his work — an affection he is passing down to his next of kin as well as the rest of us. In all the talk of downturns and recessions, up-swings and turnarounds, take a moment to reflect and relish why you’re here in the first place and remember that as a famous sociologist once said, “An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.” I Amanda Power | Circulation amanda@boutiquemediagroup.com HEADQUARTERS Boutique Media Group 145 Main St., 3rd Fl., Ossining, NY 10562 tel: 914.923.0616 | fax: 914.923.0018 www.boutiquemediagroup.com Cheers, Kelly Hushin, editor-in-chief and Michael Schneider, publisher, in the Screening Room at the Crosby Street Hotel Photo by Kent Miller, Kent Miller Studios boutique DESIGN is published bi-monthly and printed on 10% recycled paper.
