Annual Review 2008 - (Page 11) New Directions Dewberry Helps Clients Meet Evolving Challenges Helping clients adjust to evolving requirements—new regulations, changing demographics, breakthrough trends and technology—is a mainstay of the Dewberry approach to professional service. In 2008, the firm’s commitment to innovation played out in a variety of projects throughout the United States. Dewberry’s agile and creative approach supported many clients as they met immediate needs—helping to protect and rebuild lives—while focusing on the challenges of tomorrow as well. With advances in medical technology and equipment, as well as overall growth and patient demand, many hospitals around the nation are addressing the need for increased power and infrastructure. Cape Fear Valley Health System in North Carolina has embarked upon a multi-phase expansion program that includes a new 10,000kW emergency power plant and a chiller plant upgrade and expansion to support its growing hospital campus. IES Engineers-Dewberry, working closely with hospital administrators, helped to assess emergency power needs, then designed the power plant and chiller plant improvements as well as an extensive utility distribution system. (Chuck Worthy, Jr., Project Manager) Like many states around the country, California has recognized the vital importance of helping inmates transition into productive lives after incarceration. Focusing specifically on offenders who are nearing release, the state commissioned PSA-Dewberry to master plan a prototype secure facility for counseling and treatment, vocational training, and other services. The design team is also addressing the conversion of a former state prison in Stockton to serve as the new Northern California Re-entry Facility, which will be among the first in the state to provide the transitional, community-based services to inmates as they prepare for parole. (Gerry Guerrero, AIA, Project Manager and Jim Matarelli, Director of Corrections) Dewberry has also been innovative in the rapidly advancing realm of emergency management services, addressing new challenges for a long-term client: the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). With new technology, training initiatives, and a clear mandate for careful planning and rapid response, FEMA is incorporating the latest research and communication tools into its emergency management needs. Long a leader in this vital practice area, Dewberry has helped introduce many cutting-edge concepts for the federal government and local communities, including emergency planning for people with functional and medical needs as well as evacuation and sheltering plans for companion animals.
