In 2004, DOL decided to pursue a LEED-certified dormitory at its Job Corps center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. PBDewberry, a joint venture between Dewberry and Parsons Brinckerhoff, serves as the program manager for facilities management for Job Corps campuses nationwide. As the program manager, PBDewberry oversaw programming, planning, design, and construction of the Albuquerque dormitory and selected a LEED-accredited architect to complete the design. Early in the process four staff members also obtained LEED accreditation. With construction complete, DOL anticipates receiving LEED Gold certification for the new facility. Sustainable features of this twostory, 29,000-square-foot and 136-bed facility include a site located in a public transit-accessible setting; vegetation irrigated by gray water; energy saving measures, such as a high-albedo (reflective) roof, a biomass pellet boiler, and Energy Star-rated equipment; an air quality program that includes environmentally friendly cleaning products for the janitorial staff; and recycling or redirecting from landfills to other projects over 90% of the construction waste. Although many of the building program’s projects may not be submitted for certification, Harris plans to pursue certification on a number of facilities to help signify the post’s commitment to the Army’s green building program. The team at Fort Bragg has also been successful in becoming a charter member of the USGBC’s portfolio program. According to the USGBC, the portfolio program enables companies and building owners to integrate LEED into their new and existing building projects using a streamlined certification process. As part of the program’s pilot, Fort Bragg has submitted 43 buildings or 5.4 million square feet into the program, with the hope of achieving a more cost-effective path to certification. By incorporating sustainable design features into its new Albuquerque facility, DOL is demonstrating to the Job Corps students energy and environmental stewardship. 3 http://jobcorps.dol.gov/ http://jobcorps.dol.gov/
