From the Ground Up Terrestrial LiDAR Helps Ascertain Risk Complex terrain, crowded or inaccessible roadways, historically significant or environmentally sensitive conditions…today’s surveying challenges are requiring technologically innovative solutions that exceed demands of clients and communities alike. Faced with the need to meet stringent construction requirements or identify potentially hazardous situations, surveyors are making breakthroughs in delivering highly accurate digital survey models that provide accessible data in the imagery’s pixels. Along one of the most heavily traveled roadways in Northern Virginia, the Route 7 corridor between Route 123 at Tysons Corner and the Dulles Toll Road, Dulles Transit Partners, a joint venture of Bechtel and Washington Group, is preparing to extend the Washington, DC, area metro system. Dewberry was tasked with surveying the existing conditions of the 6,600-foot-long corridor without causing any roadway disruptions. The firm turned to a new technology—3D laser scanning—and subcontracted with a team from Optira, Inc., which provided a truckmounted Riegel 390 scanner to perform the 3D imaging. Dewberry has analyzed the data collected, or “terrestrial LiDAR,” and has provided the contractor with a precise report and 3D digital model that the joint venture will compare against aerial photography of the area’s existing conditions and elevations. The study has provided Dulles Transit Partners with a comprehensive risk management tool before it proceeds with jacking and boring under the existing roadway to install new utility lines. Further north, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the Bergen Tunnel is about to undergo a major renovation under the direction of Conrail. The tunnel’s height is limiting some transport capacity, and in order to allow current double stack cars, the Dewberry surveyors, along with Optira, Inc., drive down Route 7 in Virginia to perform the ground laser scanning data collection. The imagery can provide extremely high resolution measurements of up to 1/100 of a foot, detail enough to read a street sign. 2
