How 2-D Becomes Innovative
Applying Modeling Technologies Helps Communities Prepare for the Worst
Within a floodplain, engineers have traditionally developed one-dimensional models that have been effective tools for identifying water flow and direction in multiple scenarios, such as a 100-year flood or a dam-break scenario. Yet where flat terrain exhibiting unconfined floodplains exist, a dam breach or natural flood wave can potentially travel in all directions since the water is not confined to a narrow valley. Accurately modeling unconfined floodplains has traditionally been limited by computer processing speed and the ability to efficiently implement more accurate tools, having to resort to simplified one-dimensional models in these situations.

Implementing a Dynamic Flood Routing Model
Recently, Dewberry has worked with multiple clients to implement various 2-D hydrologic and hydraulic models for unconfined floodplains. The firm has also been able to apply 2-D scenarios for dam break modeling, behind levee analysis, closed basin systems, and unconfined shallow overland flow.

Interfacing for Practical Application
Once a model is complete, the results can be transferred to a GIS application and used to accurately map floodplains and dam or levee inundation zones using high-resolution digital terrain models developed from available LiDAR data. Key model outputs, such as flood depths, velocities, arrival times, and elevations can also be extracted from the models. This information may be used for more detailed planning, such as Emergency Action Plans for dams and levees and detailed risk and consequence assessments, as well as mitigation and emergency evacuation planning. The 2-D model produces a more accurate picture of possible hazards; allowing communities to better prepare for the worst, by helping to protect lives, property, and infrastructure. Creating the Second Dimension
At the heart of 2-D models are regular or irregular digital terrain models, developed from elevation sources that can include Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and photogrammetry. Mathematical calculations are then used to route flows in eight potential directions to identify the propagation of a floodwave across complex unconfined topography. By comparison, a traditional one-dimensional model is only able to route flows in one direction, limiting the applicability of the model to clearly confined flooding sources.
