Spotlight on the Staff
In April, I had the privilege of representing Dewberry and the American Council of Engineering Companies Land Development Coalition at their annual convention in Washington, D.C. Our breakout session covered how new technology has enhanced traditional land development deliverables by enabling increased life-cycle efficiencies and higher-quality data management potential for clients’ assets My role at Dewberry supports the regular evaluation of new technologies— global positioning systems, laser scanning, 3D design, intelligent object modeling, GIS platforms, and web-based information management and collaboration— to help Dewberry and its clients achieve strategic goals. Since 2007, my production colleagues and I have been planning, evaluating, specifying, and implementing 3D object-oriented mapping, design, and stakeout technology. For the past year, we’ve seen real improvements to project work flow and deliverables using this technology, from improved survey efficiency resulting in a quicker validation and delivery of 3D baseline conditions to our engineers; to rapid prototyping—developing accurate “what if ” scenarios for clients. We’ve enabled our engineers to more rapidly design complex roadways and utility systems supporting mixed-use land development, involving median designs, template transitions, and multiple non 90-degree intersections, as well as complete grading and earthwork visualizations to streamline stakeholder buy-in. Web-based collaborative work flow tools have helped public clients quickly collect, process and share information, increasing transparency and shortening time-to-construction. We’ve worked with multiple clients to create cost-effective project information management tools ranging from simple form-based systems to GIS-based graphically and geospatially enhanced web applications. We’re committed to developing our people, technologies and work flow to support, and if necessary, help pave the way for integrated project results. Our belief is that clients and markets will soon demand this added value across all of our market segments. We work to align our services with the business needs of our clients and believe that an experienced and educated application of new technology will help manage the full life-cycle of the built environment.
