Living Design
Maximizing Building Performance Through Forward-Thinking Design
As sustainable design continues to gain acceptance and become the norm, architects and engineers are pioneering innovative design approaches aimed at producing high-performance, energy-efficient buildings. Design teams are exploring how innovations in building materials can create breathable “skins,” how new technologies can actively respond to environmental changes, and how a facility can reduce its carbon footprint all while helping to meet program goals within set budgets.
A Living Example
Designed to harness natural ventilation, the Harm A. Weber Academic Center at Judson University, Elgin, Illinois, is a model facility for energy efficiency. Working closely with Alan Short, internationally renowned expert on naturally ventilated buildings, Dewberry’s Elgin office developed the design, a pioneering example of a naturally ventilated building on a North American university campus. Computational fluid dynamics modeling was performed at the University of Cambridge; planning and ventilation strategies came out of Short’s London office, while project coordination, working drawings, and construction administration were completed by Dewberry.
heating and ventilation systems were integrated into the design, resulting in smaller, more efficient systems that operate less frequently. The facility is orientated to maximize natural light, with white panels around deeply recessed windows that bounce the maximum amount of natural light into the building. During sunny periods, many interior rooms require no artificial lighting. Computer-controlled vents open and close automatically to ventilate the building with fresh air. During spring and fall, the building warms and cools itself with little assistance from mechanical systems. This approach offers the potential to reduce the building’s energy consumption by up to 40 percent when compared with conventional designs.
Passive and Active Design Principles
By conceptualizing the Weber building with no mechanical systems, passive design elements took priority in how the facility would best work with its surrounding environment. Once these options were incorporated, the building’s

Monitoring for Success
Since opening, the LEED® Gold academic center is serving as a benchmark for healthy student working environments. Multiple research papers that may be found at the university’s website have been written about the facility’s design features and performance.
