Fast-Track Training
New Driver Training Complex Opens Near Fort Pickett
With a state-of-the-art new driver training complex, the
Classroom Instruction
Virginia State Police have taken the concept of the “learning
Away from the high-speed pursuit practice, troopers
curve” to an entirely new level. The $27.5-million facility,
set on a 680-acre site near Fort Pickett in southern Virginia,
features 4.5 miles of roadway courses that simulate
the commonwealth’s diverse topography and driving
conditions, from winding country roads to interstate
highways and loops.
Mud, Slush, and Gravel
An unusual project in many respects, the development
of the complex involved extensive site work, ranging
from tests for World War II-era land mines left over from
training exercises to navigating driving routes amidst
the rural setting’s wooded groves, streams, ravines, and
wetlands. A 25,000-square-foot “skid pan,” a concrete pad
with water pumped over the surface from an on-site well,
enables troopers to train in wet, hydroplane conditions
while sprinklers spray their windshields. An off-road area
allows them to experience dirt and gravel road conditions
common in rural areas.
Urban conditions include areas laid out in city blocks,
with details such as railroad crossings, cul-de-sacs, five-point
stops, alleys, dead-ends, and a traffic circle. Parked cars serve
as props to create more realistic and challenging scenarios.

gather for classroom and simulated training at the
center’s new three-story, 52,000-square-foot facility. The
building includes 60 squad rooms that accommodate up
to 120 cadets, theater-style classrooms, a cafeteria, offices,
and meeting space. A driver simulation room features 550
LE™ Interactive Driving Simulation Systems that model
the cockpit of a police cruiser.
Other buildings include an observation tower and a
vehicle maintenance garage. A firing range is now under
construction on the site. The complex was also designed to
serve as an alternate emergency operations center for the
State Police.
Dewberry provided complete architectural and
engineering services for the project. “A lot of thought and
planning went into the design of this facility, especially
the track,” says Ronald Rice, program director with the
Virginia State Police. “We want the training to be as
practical as possible.”
