Shepard Hockaday
MEP Service Line Leader
Henry Ford once said, “If you need a machine and don’t buy it, then you will ultimately find you have paid for it but don’t have it.” As a seasoned mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) practitioner, I firmly believe Henry Ford’s philosophy can be applied to our MEP clients. Those who need efficient MEP systems but don’t buy them typically end up paying for the system in the long run due to the higher life cycle costs. In this market environment it’s a great time to work as an MEP engineer, and I consider myself very fortunate to lead this service line at Dewberry. The markets we serve are increasing their demand for higher energy efficiency and sustainable MEP systems. This emphasis on efficiencies has increased the demand and scope for our traditional MEP design services and has allowed us to grow in key areas such as energy audit and use assessments, energy modeling, energy analysis, and MEP master planning and facility assessments. When you look at the diversity of our MEP practice, both in terms of the services offered and the markets we serve, we can take this collective body of expertise and use it to the advantage of our client base. One example is the work we do for university hospitals. Not only does our MEP practice have a strong history of work for higher education clients (who have unique issues with diverse campus buildings), but we also have multiple professionals who specialize and are well known for MEP healthcare design. This synergy provides the very best simulation of healthcare facilities in an instructional environment. What I’ve found during my tenure at Dewberry is the culture and people are a perfect match to my background and ideals. I grew up working on a tobacco and produce farm in rural Johnson County, North Carolina, where my family taught me the values of hard work, stretching resources, spending money wisely, and respecting the environment and fellowman. I am proud to say I work with a company that’s an extension of these ideas that are reflected in the people I work with and in the services we offer.
