In March 2016, I spent a day volunteering at Eagle School
Intermediate, presenting to ten different fifth grade
classes what civil engineers do, as opposed to other types
of engineering. After going through basic information,
I showed the students examples of different structures
from around the community that they'd recognize, and
explained how civil engineers were responsible for the
designs, allowing the students to better relate to the work
we did. Most importantly, I showed the different classes
pictures of what civil engineers look like-relaying the
message that anyone can be a civil engineer, as long as
they put their mind to it.

Last year, I had the opportunity to serve as a water
resources judge for the 15th annual North Carolina
Regional Future City Competition. This event brings
together hundreds of middle school students to design
and build a futuristic city using the engineering design
process as a framework. Teams created full scale, 3-D
models of their city, using LEGOs®, tree limbs, and
any other materials. Three other judges and I listened
to the 33 different teams' presentations and asked
them questions about their city's management and
application of water resources-from how they address
stormwater to its infrastructure.
