SDSU Biofuels Research Funding Projects With Focus on Commercial Application Dr. James Doolittle, director of the North Central Sun Grant Center at South Dakota State University, said SDSU’s Sun Grant program focuses on biofuels research with a commercial emphasis. “We highly encourage industry partnerships in our research projects,” Doolittle said. “For example, we are cur- Dr. James rently working with VeraSun and ICM, companies that work with researchers and provide funding.” SDSU is a center in the Sun Grant Initiative, which began in 2002 and is a national effort to expand the teaching, research, and extension mission at land grant universities regarding biofuels, biopower, and bioproducts. SDSU Projects SDSU Sun Grant biofuels projects include: • SDSU and other Sun Grant regions, the U.S. Geological Survey, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory researching feedstock assessment, and determining feedstock supply and the impact of biofuels plants in various regions. Doolittle • Switchgrass as a potential bioenergy crop and study of prairie cordgrass. Prairie cordgrass will grow in salty soils. Researchers are finding the best agronomics and the best ways to convert these grasses intofuels and products. • Conversion, pretreatment strategies to free up components of cellulosic feedstocks. • Conserving water in pretreatment processes for cellulosic ethanol feedstocks. • A pyrolysis co-product, biochar, may be utilized as a way to put nutrients back into the soil. Five Centers SDSU is one of five Sun Grant center regions across the United States. Other regions include: • Northeast Region, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. • South Central Region, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. • Western Regional Center, Oregon State University, Corvallis. • Southeastern Regional Center, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN.
