paradigm shift here. What we need to do in the United States is produce fuel and food products at the same plant. In the future, there won’t be ethanol plants. There will be food processing plants that also produce fuel. tionally and then processes the rest of the kernel into ethanol. Cars Addicted to Oil I find it bizarre that we import as much oil as we do and so much land is in the Conservation Reserve Program. That land could be used to grow a biofuels crop so that we can get control of our own energy independence. I would like to quote Robert Zubrin, author, and make a simple statement: “We are not addicted to oil. Our cars are.” With the size of this country, we have developed a lifestyle of mobility. We in this country do not have a choice. Our cars only run on gas. What needs to happen is that we all have flex-fuel vehicles, so that the consumer has a choice. It costs GM only $100 extra to convert a vehicle to flex fuel. Our auto industry is struggling. Make all vehicles flex-fuel, and you’ll solve the sales problem and increase use of alternative fuels. Energy Independence I always say that the fuel ethanol industry is a bridge to our energy independence. Ethanol is a section of that bridge. We’re the first section. Advanced biofuels like cellulosic ethanol are the next section. A strategic energy policy opens up all those doors. The consumer needs to have a choice of fuel. In the 1970s, Brazil was a significant importer of oil. Now that country’s dependence on foreign oil is zero. We can do the same thing here, and we can do it relatively quickly, if we want to. Myke Feinman, editor Total Kernel Optimization We can use our agricultural surplus capability to give stability to our agriculture. There are a lot of farmers out there. We are the most prepared country in the world to add to the world’s food supply of grain. The United States has contributed to the global shortfall of grain because of our farm programs that have never encouraged alternative use of crops. We can have food and fuel. That’s what we’re doing at our LifeLine Foods plant in St. Joseph, MO. There our Total Kernel Optimization (TKOTM) program is being demonstrated. We’re taking corn and splitting it into three parts—endosperm, fiber, and germ.
