Saving Water, Energy The plant utilizes a Barr Rosin High Efficiency Dryer system which is designed to capture waste heat and water from the dryer exhaust, then clean and recycle the waste heat and water. Busch knows firsthand how well the technology saves both energy and water consumption. “We’re saving energy by not heating up and cooling down inert material,” Busch said. The BTUs per gallon of ethanol are also below the industry average of approximately 34,000 BTUs. “Our BTUs per gallon are 21,000, and we know we can go lower,” he continued. “We use less than three gallons of water per gallon of ethanol,” Busch added. Existing Site Features The ethanol plant is sited next to a former malting plant, which has 10 million bushels of grain storage. Busch said 8 million bushels of that storage is used for corn and 2 million bushels for various feed products. The ethanol plant takes up 90 acres of the 370-acre site. Corn is trucked in from as far as 125 miles away, Busch said. The site also already had access to rail, electricity, natural gas, and four commercial water wells, eliminating the need to hook onto those services or lay new track.
