Biofuels Journal - September/October 2008 - (Page 34) With only 3% of the U.S. market having flex-fueled, it doesn’t make sense for gas station owners to install alcohol pumps. We must allow people a choice of transportation. But if a bill was passed requiring FFVs, there could be 50 million FFVs on the road in three years, giving plenty of incentive for gas-station owners to install alcohol pumps. were too high, then people would get their shoes elsewhere. Alcohol is something we can make. Something everyone can make. And if everyone can make it and we make the cars compatible, then suddenly ethanol is like shoes instead of gold. Oil is like gold, and you can’t find gold just anywhere. And though we can drill for oil, it won’t be the same as OPEC countries who can stick a straw in the ground to find oil. The way to defeat OPEC is to diminish their powers by taking the value of oil away. - Robert Zubrin, President of Pioneer Astronautics A Fuel For Everyone If we reduce reliance on Middle East oil, we will see the results relatively quickly. The solution is turning fuel into something anyone can make. Using an example of ethanol/methanol as shoes, the shoes are something you need and you need them much more than you need a vehicle, but shoes are not a strategic commodity. The key is, everyone can make shoes, and since everyone can make them, buying shoes becomes much cheaper, because the market is level. If the price An Open Market The key thing is that we must open the fuel market to competition. Though drilling for oil in the United States would certainly be profitable, it is not a long-term solution. Eventually, we will run out of oil before our enemies do, and then we will really be at the mercy of oil prices. What we need to do is open up competition by creating a new fuel market. This will not only help the United States, but help other countries as well. If FFVs were made mandatory, it could influence foreign automakers interested in the American auto market to change their vehicles to FFVs, which would create an international market. Then, OPEC’s monopoly of the worldwide oil supply would be broken. Producing FFVs will benefit not only the United States, but many other countries as well. Another perk to changing to alcohol fuels is that people who own older vehicles will benefit, as well. As the market changes and oil prices are forced to compete, they will come down in price and make oil more affordable for older model cars.
