According to REG COO Daniel Oh, the Ames, IA-based biodiesel producer purchased the plant, which was 90% complete, from U.S. Biodiesel Group in January. It went online in June and was near capacity by September. “We have plants in the heartland and also have facilities on coastal locations with a new plant being constructed at New Orleans, LA and this facility,” Oh said. “For us, it was very important to be accessible to the oil industry,” he continued. “Houston is the heart of the petroleum industry, which is increasingly adopting biodiesel. We want to be down where the petroleum refineries are.” In addition to being located near the petroleum industry, the Lurgi-designed plant is also adjacent to LBC Tank Terminals, which has barge, rail, and ship access and large fuel storage capability. LBC also han-dles direct transfers be- tween ships and barges and between railcar and trucks. “REG leases services from LBC,” Oh said. “LBC has the ability to help with pipeline acDaniel Oh tivities and also has most of anything we need to make biodiesel, such as raw materials, like methanol,” Oh noted. “Houston is the heart of the petroleum industry, which is increasingly adopting biodiesel.
