Multiple Feedstocks Innovation Fuels’ 40-MMGY Biodiesel Plant, Newark, NJ A new 40-million-gallon-per-year (MMGY) biodiesel plant in Newark, NJ will produce fuel from multiple feedstocks including virgin vegetable oils, tallow, poultry fat, and used vegetable oil. Along with processing multiple feedstocks, the plant is also capable of pro- cessing feedstocks with free fatty acids (FFAs) as high as 50%. According to CEO John Fox, the plant commonly will process 15% FFAs. Fox said that Innovation Fuels’ proprietary production technology allows it to process higher FFAs, allowing them to utilize lower cost feedstocks. “Once you have a good understanding of processing higher FFAs, this gives you a competitive advantage,” Fox noted. The plant often processes feedstocks with high FFAs, allowing it to be competitive with plants that only can accept virgin vegetable oils. “I think the trend for the industry is we have to get away from food-based vegetable oils and go to lower-priced feedstocks,” Fox said. “There is an argument that most of the ramp up of food prices is due to high energy costs,” Fox continued. “Ultimately, it’s really a matter of con- trolling your own destiny.
