Biodiesel Emissions Six-Month Study to Determine Carbon Emissions From Semis Soon, freight carriers will be able to determine the amount of emissions savings their trucks are achieving by using biodiesel. A six-month study, sponsored by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), that began in August, will look at how much carbon a truck releases into the atmosphere based on its use of B5 or B99. The NBB has teamed up with Chiseven 2007 trucks owned by States Logistics. Five of the trucks will use B5 and two B99. The vehicles average more than 27,000 miles per month. The over-the-road study will include Data Collected The data collected in the study will include: • Vehicle type. • Distance traveled. • Number of gallons used. • Percentage of biodiesel used. • Biodiesel feedstock used. “The end result will be a report on total CO2 emitted from both the petroleum diesel (B5) and biodiesel (B99), CO2 reduction from using biodiesel and the quantifiable cost to offset petroleum CO2,” said Sharon Bell, trucking outreach for the NBB, Jefferson City, MO (573-635-3893). “The CO2 emissions are based on life cycle reduction,” Bell said. “Studies show that there is a 78% lifecycle reduction in CO2 with soy-based biodiesel,” Bell noted. The findings will be released next spring at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY. Preliminary data in May and June showed a 16.5-ton reduction in CO2 emissions from the test fleet. Bell said she has found that owneroperators, while they want to use a greener fuel in their vehicles, will tend to use biodiesel if it is less expensive than petro diesel. “The owner-operators are very price sensitive,” Bell said.
