Biofuels Journal - September/October 2008 - (Page 97) Argentina Argentina’s biodiesel output is expected to continue to soar this year, with its share of worldwide biodiesel production rising to 10%. Biodiesel production is expected to climb by 840,000 tons to 1.4 million tons in 2008, with 2009 production expected to jump to 2.4 million tons. production facilities, which are expected to go on-line 2008. Columbia Amiworld, Inc. announced in mid August its Santa Marta plant will increase diesel and biodiesel production by 300%. The Columbian company plans to produce 100,000 barrels per month once the expansion of the plant is completed completed in 2009. man subsidiary Emerald Biodiesel and produce 110 million liters of rapeseed oil annually. • Green Biofuels Ireland, Ltd. (GBIL) produced its first batch of biodiesel at its Marshmeadows plant in early September. The plant is Ireland’s first commercialscale biodiesel processing plant and is designed to produce 34 million gallons of biodiesel a year (MMGY). Brazil • Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced in late August that the country must increase production of biodiesel derived from ricin, so that biodiesel production depends less on soy oil and volatile international prices. The Brazilian government instead is pushing for a program of family agriculture linked to production of other types of oilseeds to increase biodiesel output. • Petrobras Biocombustivel in late August inaugurated its Quixada plant, which has a production volume of 57 million liters of biodiesel per year. This is the second of three planned biodiesel plants Petrobras will open over the next year. • For the economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC), the biodiesel market currently is estimated at $557.57 million, but is expected to increase to $6 billion by 2012. The current number of market players in BRIC is 35, but an additonal 33 players are in the process of setting up Israel Dubai Dubai-based Ecobility Energy Solutions proposed Aug. 31 the building of a commercial biodiesel production plant that will be capable of producing about 3 million gallons of biodiesel annually (MMGY). Israel Corp. subsidiary IC Green Energy Ltd. (ICG) has acquired 43% of German biodiesel company Petrotec AG from Warburg Pincus. ICG will also make a public offer to purchase the public’s shares in Petrotec. Petrotec produces 185,000 tons of biodiesel a year between its two plants, which utilize used cooking oil collected from Europe and the United States, to produce biodiesel. India Naturol Bioenergy has been shipping biodiesel to the United States and the European Union since June because India cannot blend alternative fuels into gasoline and diesel yet. Naturol Bioenergy began producing biodieselinAprilatits$1.4billionplant,which is the first biodiesel plant in the country. Singapore A nearly-50% drop in the price of palm oil has helped both big and small producers of biodiesel. Palm oil reached a record high of 4,489 ringgit a ton in March and crude oil hit a record over $147 (Rs6,600 now) a barrel in mid-July which forced small Singapore producers to stop making biodiesel and bigger companies to cut down significantly. Compiled from news reports by Adam Tedder, associate editor SEPT/OCT 08 | BFJ Ireland Bioverda, an alternative fuels company that is a subsidiary of Irish-based National Toll Roads, in late August annnounced it will invest €37 million to build a new biodiesel plant in Thuringen, Germany. The plant will be operated by its Ger- 97
