Product Review Beta Tec’s IsoStab hop product is a natural alternative to the utilization of antibiotics and harsh chemicals in the ethanol process. According to Beta Tech Director of Sales William Popa, the use of IsoStab increases ethanol yields. “Basically, what IsoStab does is change the interior pH of a bacteria,” said Popa. “Then the bacteria will assume it’s coming under attack, shut down cell walls, and stop glucose transfer. This stops glucose from being utilized by bacteria, thus allowing the yeast to benefit.” Also, IsoStab eliminates antibiotic use, Popa added. “Normally, we can go into a plant and provide this method at the same cost or lower than the plants’ current antibiotic use,” Popa said. He added that if the plant is using harsh chemicals, IsoStab could reduce the plant’s antibiotic cost by 50% displacing the harsh chemicals in the process. “Each plant varies,” Popa said. “In general, they’re not going to spend more. Most spend 50% less.” Beta Tech was formed in 1997 as part of the Barth-Haas Group which has operations in England, Germany, Australia, China, Japan, and the United States. Barth-Haas was founded in 1794, and its U.S. division was founded in 1914. IsoStab was introduced first in 2002, and marketing to ethanol plants started in 2004. The company began in 1898 as a railcar leasing company, leasing tank cars and refrigerator cars, and started manufacturing railcars in the early 20th century. In 1984, it started outsourcing manufacturing of railcars to GATX specifications and refocused on leasing and maintaining railcars. “We’ve been on the New York Stock Exchange since 1916 and paid a dividend every quarter since 1919,” said Robert Zmudka, vice president and executive director of strategic sales. “We’re a customer-focused, serviceoriented company,” Zmudka said. “Our goal is to develop longstanding relationships with clients.” He said the company’s top 10 customers have been with GATX for an average of 52 years. According to Zmudka, GATX has worked with a number of ethanol and biodiesel plants by acquiring railcar assets, leasing them to the plant and then maintaining those leased railcars. “Our main focus is to let our biofuels customers sell and produce their products, without having to worry about owning or maintaining the railcars,” Zmudka said. GATX, based in Chicago, IL, has five railcar maintenance shops in Canada and three in the United States, as well as an extensive mobile service network across North America. Services GATX provides the following services to biofuels plants: • Leasing railcars that carry grains and other feedstocks including wood chips for cellulosic ethanol. • Providing railcars to transport all biofuels products and co-products including ethanol, biodiesel, distillers grains, and CO2. • Repair and maintenance work on railcars, including mobile repair units that come to the plant.
