Biofuels Journal - January/February 2009 - (Page 102) Product Review The ProSonix jet cooker provides ethanol producers with a tool to cook corn slurry at a low pressure, thereby potentially reducing energy costs. “You also get reduced wear and more uniform wear, which allows for longer life for the components,” said Bruce Cincotta, ProSonix general manager of engineering. “In a typical ethanol plant, you slurry up the starch and water, then send it through the jet cooker for primary liquefaction of the starch,” Cincotta explained. “The front end of our process is right after the mix of corn and water together. We heat up to hydrolyze the starch, beginning the conversion of the starch to sugar.” He said the ProSonix jet cooker can save at least 10% in energy costs. “That’s going to vary depending on the size of the unit,” he added. The reason for the energy savings and smooth wear, said Cincotta, is the unit’s rotating, adjusting condensing tube. “The tube is better aligned with the stem injection allowing the cooker to run with lower pressure drops; and the tube adjustment is rotary, causing the wear to tend to even out,” Cincotta said. ProSonix was founded in 2006 and has been marketing to the ethanol industry since its inception. The global company, based in Milwaukee, WI, also works in the mining, pulp and paper, chemical, and other process industries. Features Jet Cooker ProSonix 800-849-1130 Milwaukee, WI www.pro-sonix.com Features of the ProSonix jet cooker include: • Internal components customized for the specific application. • Different alloys that can be utilized in a single unit. Units can be constructed of stainless steel, carbon steel, other materials or any combination required to keep costs down. • Tube adjustment available in manual or automated versions. The automated version uses simple plant controls—no proprietary black box. Response No. 1021 Service Review S.K. Patil & Associates is poised to help ethanol producers move from being primarily fuel plants to becoming both food and fuel processors. “Adding value to co-products is one of the key areas the ethanol industry is working on right now,” said S.K. Patil President Sakharam Patil. He said his consulting company will help ethanol producers convert their existing plants to create additional coproducts like corn oil and proteins utilizing technologies like fractionation. “In the co-products area, I do understand all the fractions of corn,” Patil said. “I worked for 28 years in the corn industry.” He said an ethanol producer, for example, could extract zein protein from the front end of an ethanol plant, providing a high-value co-product. “Zein is sold for $10 a pound,” Patil said. “That’s like gold for the ethanol producer.” The company, based in Munster, IN, was formed in 2002 by Patil and other engineers from the food processing industry. Patil himself worked at Cargill, Bunge, and Kellogg’s. His firm has also worked for ethanol producers utilizing such feedstocks as sweet sorghum. Services S.K.
